FT: Sheff Utd 1-2 West Brom

Here's what tonight's result at Bramall Lane does to the Championship table.

The Baggies leapfrog the Blades to go up to third but victories for the top two tomorrow would give them a nice cushion over the chasing pack.

West Brom goalscorer Gareth Barry told Sky Sports:

(On his goal) "It was a critical stage really because we were really struggling. We got on top in the second half and we were the better team."

Match-winner Kieran Gibbs said: "We have come from behind a few times this season and you need to be mentally strong in this league.

"The second half was brilliant. I just hope we can start games the way we've been finishing them.

"We changed formation a little bit and that helped but our front three are so dangerous that I think teams drop off."

  4. Barry equaliser a 'vital moment'published at 21:40 GMT 14 December 2018

Former West Brom striker on BBC WM 95.6

West Brom have come back from a poor first half, they got back in it just before half-time and that was a vital moment.

They kept the ball better and looked a far better side in the second half. That second goal was enough to win them this match.

Sheffield United, in the second half, didn't really threaten Albion a lot.

I thought Gareth Barry was superb.

    Huge win for the Baggies!

They were under the cosh for large spells of the first half and found themselves a goal behind after David McGoldrick's early strike.

However, Gareth Barry levelled before the break and a crisp Kieran Gibbs shot gave them all three points.

Darren Moore's side climb to third in the Championship.

West Brom bring on veteran Chris Brunt for the final 90 seconds.

The former Sheffield Wednesday man takes the place of the excellent Harvey Barnes.

Last throw of the dice for the hosts.

Winger Marvin Johnson comes on for the final few moments for full-back Enda Stevens.

    Into the final three minutes.

The Blades are going to need something special to get a leveller now because they've hardly been in the Albion half since the visitors went in front.

Kudos to Swemp, who has posted a picture of a Bee Gee - Barry Gibb - to us on Twitter in honour of Albion's two goalscorers at Bramall Lane tonight.

Clever. Very clever. I like it.

    Sheff Utd 1-2 West Brom

Kieran Gibbs has another foray forward and looks to play a one-two on the edge of the Blades area but it's blocked by the home defence.

The visitors deserve all the plaudits right now because they were second best for much of the first half but dug in and could be coming away with a huge win.

Big miss from Blades striker Billy Sharp.

The ball is half-cleared to the Sheffield United skipper but he slashes at his effort and it flies over the bar.

    Quick bit of housekeeping.

The Blades brought on Conor Washington for Mark Duffy just after Albion went in front.

Kieran Gibbs' goal, which was really well finished by the left-back, is just his fifth league goal ever.

    Super goal!

West Brom winger Matt Phillips does well to get down the right and his ball in is wonderfully backheeled into the path of Kieran Gibbs by Harvey Barnes.

It's a crisp finish by the former Arsenal man and the visitors lead for the first time tonight.

He's already made one change and I wonder if Blades boss Chris Wilder (above) might be considering a second.

His side had the wind knocked out of their sails by Albion's equaliser before the break and they've never really got back on top since.

The two men above have both had a big impact on this game.

Young Albion forward Harvey Barnes set up his side's equaliser while Blades defender Chris Basham has been excellent at the back and a danger when getting forward.

Could one of them pop up with a match-winning intervention? It's shaping up for a cracking conclusion at Bramall Lane.

    The Baggies should lead!

They spring a breakaway and Dwight Gayle eventually ends up squaring for Harvey Barnes but Blades keeper Dean Henderson rushes out well to divert Barnes' chip over the bar.

Home defender John Egan is booked for a comical handball in the build-up.

What a waste from Dwight Gayle!

The Baggies striker gets away down the West Brom right and the visitors have two men free in the area but Gayle's cross is easily intercepted and cleared away by Jack O'Connell.

    Well.

Gareth Barry hits a ball over the top for Dwight Gayle to latch on to and the Baggies striker goes down after some contact from Sheffield United defender Jack O'Connell.

The ref waves play on but, for my money, that should have been a free-kick to the visitors and possibly trouble for the Blades man.
