Best WSL game so far this season. At last, the Lionesses are showing what they've got going forward after the safety-first football of the previous manager. Fair play to City, they came through it in the end, but it was in the balance for most of the second half.

  3. 'There is something in this group'published at 14:29 GMT 25 January

FT: London City Lionesses 1-2 Manchester City

    Manchester City

Manchester City manager Andree Jeglertz "I said it before, all teams we play against will do different things to make it difficult for us. London City were defending in a very good way, shut off spaces and we struggled with the transitions.

"It was a tough game, but there is something in this group that even though it is not a beautiful game, we still find ways to win, keep on going and finding diferent spaces.

"I am very happy and also proud of this winning mentality in the group."

On Kerolin scoring on her return from injury: "We need all players. Kerolin is back, Aoba Fujino is on her way back, Mary Fowler is on her way back. There are a lot of attacking threats we have. Kerolin was away for two weeks, it's awesome to have back on the field.

On being nine points clear in the title race: "There are a lot of games left, but there are no easy wins. There is a long way to go.

"We have some disappointment after we lost to them [Chelsea] in the week, so we are focused on finding another way of winning that game [next weekend]."

  4. 'This showed we need to keep building'published at 14:28 GMT 25 January

FT: Aston Villa 1-4 Man Utd

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa manager Natalia Arroyo speaking after defeat by Manchester United: "We stopped competing after we conceded the second goal and missed the chance to equalise after that. It was easy for them to score the next goals and kill us. For 60 good minutes, we were strong and defending well and having the chances.

"We threw quite a lot at them in the first half. But it's about being ruthless and they showed that they are better than us. They showed that we need to keep building.

"If we want to compete, we definitely have to defeat Manchester United. We need to learn from the second half and grow."

Just seen the post match interview by Bethany England. Very impressive - not only articulate but honest, humble and she even had the presence of mind to apologise to the Spurs fans (who were brilliant, by the way). Well done to them and Bethany England.

  6. 'Liverpool were the better team'published at 14:25 GMT 25 January

    FT: Liverpool 2-0 Tottenham

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham manager Martin Ho: "I thought Liverpool were the better team. We weren't at it. Had moments when looked good, second half a little more.

"Offensively, when you are away from home and are given small moments, you need to take them. Liverpool were the better team and we didn’t get up to speed at all."

  7. "Willed it into the net'published at 14:23 GMT 25 January

    FT: Liverpool 2-0 Tottenham

    Liverpool

Liverpool boss Gareth Taylor on Sky Sports: "Really satisfying. It probably looked at some stages like we weren’t going to get it, especially when Alice [Bergstrom] hit the post in the 91st minute - but football does that. It can give you another opportunity.

"The girls willed the ball into the net today. The second goal shows what we’re about as a team, being on the front foot. A lot of good chances today and we looked more like what we wanted to be. We have players that can make a big difference for us."

  9. 'We could have scored six goals'published at 14:19 GMT 25 January

FT: Aston Villa 1-4 Man Utd

    Manchester United

Manchester United manager Marc Skinner speaking after the win against Aston Villa: "It's a fantastic win, especially looking at other results as well. It puts us right in that chasing pack.

"But we weren't good enough in the first half. We had words with ourselves at half-time and decided we needed to be better. We had all the players together and talked about clarity. We spoke about simplicity of moving the ball from one side to another.

"We controlled the second half very well and it could have been six goals in the end.

On forward Melvine Malard: "That's the level of player she is. She has been incredible. She kept paying into their hands in the first half. But she deserved the player of the match in the second half."

  10. 'We will keep looking while transfer window is open'published at 14:17 GMT 25 January

FT: Aston Villa 1-4 Man Utd

    Manchester United

More from Manchester United manager Marc Skinner on January signings: "Really happy with the signings. [Lea Schuller and Ellen Wangerheim] are almost in pre-season now. We are trying to get them up to speed.

"Ellen is learning how we play. Hanna [Lundkvist] is very classy. With and without the ball, she knows what she is doing though she is very quiet. The goal was a great finish."

On whether the club will do more business in January: "Not right now. But we are looking while the window is open. Really happy with the work we have done. We will leave our minds open if anything is possible because we want to add to this wonderful team."

  11. 'There is determination in their eyes'published at 14:14 GMT 25 January

FT: London City Lionesses 1-2 Manchester City

    Manchester City

Manchester City manager Andree Jeglertz speaking to Sky Sports, on what he told his players after the match: "I said it wasn't a beautiful game and I think we struggled but I also said there's something in their eyes and determination that we will find ways, the players are struggling and fighting and even though we missed some easy passes we never give up, we keep on going. Winning teams are winning."

  12. 'This group is finding a way to win'published at 14:12 GMT 25 January

FT: London City Lionesses 1-2 Manchester City

    Manchester City

Manchester City manager Andree Jeglertz speaking to Sky Sports: "I knew it's going to be like that. We couldn't create as many chances as we wanted, they were very good in transition which caused a couple of problems. But this group is finding a way to win and I'm so happy about that. It says something about strong teams, that even though it wasn't a beauty game, we still find a way to win."

On the title race: "There are a lot of games left. We play Arsenal, Chelsea, Man Utd, Tottenham - we have all of those teams. All teams will find different ways to challenge us. It's a lot of games.

"Being in this situation is fantastic for the team and for me also, because we deserve it. We have done a great season so far we just need to keep on going and be humble in this situation, and keep doing what we have done so far, taking it one game at a time."

Manchester United forward Melvine Malard speaking after the win against Aston Villa: "We know we had a job to do when we came here. We had a difficult first half but we were better in the second half.

"We started well but then gave the ball away a lot to Villa. But we came back and knew what we had to do.

"I am enjoying this season a lot because I'm playing football. When I play, I am happy. Of course I want to score because I am a striker. But I play for the team and when I can give an assist, I am OK.

"It's been a good win and a good week too. We need to keep going as there is another big game against Liverpool next week. This year is so important for us."

On her partnership with Elisabeth Terland: "I know her a lot. I like her and she has all the confidence with her. She just need to keep going."

"We need to keep doing what we're doing. It's amazing to be in this position but it's not done yet. We have to focus game by game but for sure it's an amazing feeling. We're going to keep on doing that."

    Chloe Morgan

It was such a great game, both teams going head to head.

You could tell getting the result meant so much to both teams.

Manchester City stayed cool, calm and composed.

This league is super competitive, and there's long way to go - anything could cause an upset.

But Man City have given themselves big breathing space.

They've got two massive games ahead but they've shown that the composure and consistency is there.

    It's theirs to lose.
