Hull City moved into the Championship's play-off positions with a victory that ended Wrexham's nine-game unbeaten run in the league.

Kyle Joseph and Oli McBurnie netted either side of Kieffer Moore's penalty miss as the Tigers clinched a comfortable win at the MKM Stadium.

Sergej Jakirovic's side sit sixth and are above seventh-placed Queens Park Rangers on goal difference.

Defeat for Wrexham, just their second in 15 league outings, saw the Welsh side drop to 14th, four points adrift of the top six.

Hull started on the front foot and went ahead on 10 minutes as Joseph forced the ball beyond Arthur Okonkwo from close range after the goalkeeper had kept out Matt Crooks' initial effort.

The visitors spurned a glorious chance to level proceedings just six minutes later as Lewie Coyle's clearance struck Crooks - with the ball rolling into the path of Wrexham's top scorer Moore who dragged his shot wide from 10 yards out.

But Jakirovic's side were undeterred by that scare and continued to look the likelier to get the game's second goal as Darko Gyabi turned Crooks' cross over before Okonkwo kept out Regan Slater's low drilled strike.

Watching from the stands due to his one-match touchline ban, boss Phil Parkinson will have known the importance of his half-time team talk following his side's uninspiring and somewhat disjointed first-half showing.

Shortly after firing a tame shot well wide, Nathan Broadhead's deflected strike looped over the crossbar as the Red Dragons showed signs of life in attack.

They were awarded a penalty 10 minutes after the restart as Crooks brought down Broadhead in the box, although Ivor Pandur pounced to his right to palm away Moore's spot-kick to continue the Wales international's frustrating night.

Hull appealed in vain for a penalty of their own after Dom Hyam appeared to handle the ball in his own box.

But they doubled their lead midway through the second half as McBurnie - just four minutes after coming off the bench - guided Ryan Giles' cross beyond Okonkwo.

Liam Millar rifled against the crossbar before Okonkwo denied David Akintola late on, although victory had already appeared inevitable as Hull responded to their 4-1 defeat by Middlesbrough in style.

Only Southampton's Adam Armstrong has scored more Championship goals than Joe Gelhardt so far this season, so the Hull faithful were understandably concerned to see the 23-year-old miss out with a calf injury.

But from the word go, they had little to fear as Joseph gave the Tigers the perfect start.

McBurnie - returning following almost two months on the sidelines through injury - netted just 241 seconds after coming on to the pitch as Giles claimed his eighth league assist of the season, the best return in the division.

While the home side's attackers enjoyed their night, the same could not be said for Wrexham's Moore.

Hull - who had not kept a clean sheet in their past six league games - went into the match having faced more shots than any other side in the Championship this season.

But Wrexham did nowhere near enough in the first half to capitalise on that statistic as they failed to register a single shot on target - with their sole shot seeing Moore fire wide with the goal at his mercy.

The Wales frontman - whose 10 goals in all competitions this season have all been from open play - had another golden opportunity from the penalty spot in the second half, but was well denied by Pandur.

It was a rare off night for both Moore and Wrexham, and Saturday's home contest with Watford (15:00 GMT) will show a lot about their character as they look to bounce back from a first league defeat since losing at Stoke City on 18 October.
