Kyle Joseph (left) has scored eight goals in 27 Championship starts this season
Kyle Joseph made one goal and scored another as play-off chasing Hull City came from behind to beat relegated Sheffield Wednesday.
An Owls side now without a win in 33 league games had the better of the first half and went ahead on 23 minutes when Jamal Lowe's deflected effort found the back of the net.
But a nervy Tigers side, who had lost three of their past four Championship fixtures, were only behind for 94 seconds as Joseph's sweet low cross was calmly tapped in by midfielder Matt Crooks.
Six minutes into first-half injury-time the hosts went ahead when Domnic Iorfa could only flick Paddy McNair's free-kick into his own net.
The victory was sealed when Joseph netted his eighth goal of the season with a cool finish from Oli McBurnie's pass
And Hull had very little trouble seeing out a result which keeps them in fifth place, but now within three points of both Ipswich Town and Millwall who are third and fourth respectively following their 1-1 draw.
It also means the Tigers keep alive slim hopes of sneaking into the second automatic promotion place as the gap to Middlesbrough in second is now down to five points following Boro's 0-0 draw against Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park.
Former Sheffield United striker McBurnie could have added to the home goal tally, going close on several occasions.
He almost converted Liam Millar's cross when in the first half and was also twice denied by smart goalkeeping from Pierce Charles.
Hull are next in action on Good Friday when they travel to take on Oxford United, while Wednesday are away against Stoke City.
'We will use the break to recover' - reaction
Hull head coach Sergej Jakirovic:
"Everyone was expecting three points, but I knew it would be a tough game as they are aggressive, dangerous on the counter-attack and difficult to break down.
"I'm very pleased with the boys. We left everything on the pitch because it was not easy.
"We will use this break for mental and physical recovery. We have played so many games with our problems and our injuries so they deserve this rest.
"We hope the international players come back healthy and then we have seven games. We must be ready for every one of the them – and we will be.
"But for seven days I don't want to see anyone. I will go back to Croatia, but I will not be able to switch off from football."
Jakirovic:'It was easy after we scored third goal'
Sheffield Wednesday boss Henrik Pedersen:
"We were top in the first half. We competed at a very high level.
"One of the reasons they are in the top six as that they are so strong in transition and high on the press – I think we handled that in a good way.
"We want to play with risks, but at the same time we had to think about defending against Hull in transition.
"It was a big theme before the game, and in many of the situations we handled it really well, but we were not good enough in two of the situations and that led to two goals.
"After their equaliser we came back strong, but to concede an own goal like that was tough for the boys.
"It hurts, but the reaction from the boys with how we came back in the game showed me that they never give up. They put everything on the pitch what they were able to do."
