Patson Daka had a penalty saved as relegation threatened Leicester City were held to a goalless draw by play-off chasing Watford.

Hornets goalkeeper Egil Selvik denied Daka in the first half after Formose Mendy's challenge on Abdul Fatawu sent the Zambian to the spot.

Selvik went on to deny Stephy Mavididi, Divine Mukasa and Ben Nelson after the break, while Foxes goalkeeper Jakub Stolarczyk did well to keep Nestory Irankunda out at the other end.

The point moved Leicester up a spot, to 22nd place, and to within a point of Portsmouth immediately above them outside the drop zone.

But there would no doubt be frustration as the Foxes left Vicarage Road knowing a victory to end what is now a 10-game winless league run away from home would have lifted them out of the bottom three.

A point against the lowly Foxes heading into the international break means Watford slip seven points adrift of the Championship play-off spots, in ninth, with seven matches remaining.

The match started with Edo Kayembe looking to quickly mark his 150th Hornets appearance in memorable fashion, only to see his effort deflect wide at the end of a Watford counter-attack.

Daka's penalty, which Selvik managed to push onto the post, was the only shot on target of an otherwise uneventful first half.

Both keepers were tested after the interval, but a wayward header from Daka when unmarked at the back post was the biggest missed chance of the second half.

'We will take the point' - Watford reaction

Still: 'We'll take the point, on another day you can lose that game'

Watford boss Ed Still told BBC Three Counties Radio:

"I was trying to put my finger on it, what the emotions are, and frustrating is probably the word.

"It's a funny feeling, because on one hand to have seen how the players got out there on the pitch, credit to them. The commitment and mental strength to get over the pain for a lot of them, credit to them.

"We will take the point, because on another day you could lose that game.

"I was convinced we could have that moment in the second half where we could force a winner, and then you see that it didn't quite fall for us.

"It was frustrating because you feel a little bit powerless in moments where you know the squad is what it is and the boys are pushing through pain."

'Incredible disappointment' - Foxes reaction

Gary Rowett: 'We are disappointed not to get all three points'

Leicester City boss Gary Rowett told BBC Radio Leicester:

"I'm incredibly disappointed. If you see the balance of chances, if you look at the stats, I think we have dominated the big moments in the game.

"We get the penalty, and in my opinion I'm absolutely baffled as to why it is not a yellow card at the very least. Abdul [Fatawu] cuts inside, is in a goalscoring position.

"It was a challenge that warranted a yellow, which would have been a second yellow and red.

"We then miss the penalty and it's a bit of a double whammy; it's a big moment in the game. We obviously have to take care of our own part of it, which is scoring the penalty, but we saw one against Bristol City where Jak [Foxes goalkeeper Jakub Stolarczyk] saved it, so it happens. It's just unfortunate that it happened when we desperately need goals.

"I don't think it was a 0-0 game, and I thought the performance, to come here and have more possession than Watford and create bigger chances than Watford, a team that is chasing the play-offs, again shows our capability. But we are sat here with one from the game so feels a little disheartening."
