More from interim Manchester United boss Darren Fletcher: "Shea Lacey's yellow card is ridiculous compared to the fouls that we had against us all game which ultimately then the lad makes a mistake and is sent off. For me it is poor refereeing."

On how Shea Lacey is doing after being sent off: "He's disappointed because he cares and he understands and he knows he will learn from it. There is no doubt about his talent and it was a steep learning curve today but we believe in Shea.

"He's one of our most exciting young prospects and I'm sure at Old Trafford he will have a chance to make amends for that in the future."

Brighton fans will feel they owed Manchester United one when it came to the FA Cup. They might have won on their last three trips to Old Trafford prior to this season, but in this competition, they had nothing but painful memories.

The biggest was that 1983 'Smith must score' FA Cup final, when Seagulls striker Gordon Smith's shot in the last minute at Wembley was saved by Gary Bailey, thus denying them victory, with defeat following in the replay.

Three seasons ago, the two sides met at Wembley again. Most observers felt Brighton were clearly the better side in the semi-final, but it was United who prevailed, on penalties.

This time Fabian Hurzeler's side got the win they deserved.

Brighton manager Fabin Hurzeler, speaking to BBC Match of the Day:

"I'm very happy for the fans because they always give us great support. Now they have to travel twice to Manchester and it's not the closest place for us. So I'm really happy for them, they spend a lot of money and time for us. Hopefully they have a nice Sunday.

"We always have the belief to compete with the best teams. You need to have this if you want to achieve something. We are a club with ambition."

More from Darren Fletcher on what the next manager has to do: "Confidence, being used to playing in a certain style and formation. They've just got to come together. It's only them in the situation and only them that can do something about it. Build the confidence, ground out some results, it might not be pretty at times."

On fan frustration: "Out of cups, only Premier League games to play for, the fans weren't happy at the end but they have got every right to air their grievances. It wasn't toxic but they showed their disappointment. I'm sure if the payers show the right reaction, the fans will get behind them like they always do because there is still a lot to play for in the Premier League this season."

Interim Manchester United boss Darren Fletcher, speaking to TNT Sports: "Mixed performance. We started OK and then the goal knocked the stuffing out of us. I challenged them at half-time to move the ball with tempo instead of just composure. When we got back to 2-1 I thought here we go, the crowd was up, the energy was up but we couldn't get it over the line and get an equalising goal.

"I think you could see the players are fragile but they've got to respond. Confidence is one of the most powerful things in football so when you don't have it, you have to dig deep and then the confidence comes back.

"It's over to them, they need to make sure that they have got a lot to play for this season. This team is still good enough to achieve success this season but they have to dig deep."

Darren Fletcher has been talking to TV.

He says fans have "every right to air their grievances".

"It wasn't toxic but they showed their disappointment."

Over the past five weeks, a season that has been delicately placed for weeks has now suddenly lurched downwards to the point where Manchester United are staring into the abyss.

While seventh in the Premier League is not catastrophic, if results against Manchester City and Arsenal go to form, they could be firmly in the bottom half of the table by the time they entertain Fulham on 1 February, where the 1958 Group of supporters plan a mass demonstration against the ownership.

The backdrop could hardly be worse for any new manager and does not offer the same immediate uplift opportunity Ole Gunnar Solskjaer enjoyed when he replaced Jose Mourinho in 2018.

It also means United face a 40-game season, their lowest since before the First World War. This is hardly going to help the financial situation Sir Jim Ratcliffe has pledged to improve, but has now added to substantially twice by sacking managers he backed at the end of the previous season - and to the tune of more than £200m.

Dwight: Matheus Cunha has been terribly poor, and not only tonight. I don't understand why he plays every week. Yes, he scores once in a while, but just by watching him every week, only a fool can say he deserves to start games. To me, he is really an overrated player.

Eighteen-year-old Shea Lacey is the first teenager to be sent off for Manchester United in all competitions since 19-year-old Luke Shaw against West Ham in February 2015.

"It's massive. To come here in the FA Cup - whether it's FA Cup or Premier League, it's always a massive occasion - it's one that we're delighted with, to get into the next round.

"There's a few boys that haven't been playing regularly, so to put on the performance that they did was huge. It shows the depth of the squad, everybody's working towards one goal and we're all buzzing inside the dressing room."

On his goal:

"It was a good first touch, I knew I had to get a clean connection and it was a great finish. When the ball's coming across and you know where the defenders are, you have to kind of... the second touch has to be a shot on goal so the first one has to be perfect. And it was nice to get that clean connection."

Andrew: I wonder if the ref might have shown just a touch more kindness there and used the chance to educate Lacey. Overly harsh.

Bob: That's poor refereeing. Ref should consider youth and passion of the situation. Would he have sent Lacey off if he wasn't on a yellow?
