Portsmouth won for the first time since beating Middlesbrough in early October
Portsmouth scored two brilliant solo goals as they beat Millwall to record their first Championship victory since early October.
Zak Swanson opened the scoring in the first half with a thunderbolt from around 25 yards, sending the ball into the top corner to spark wild celebrations.
The Blues doubled their lead in the second period when Adrian Segecic managed to lift the ball over Millwall keeper Max Crocombe from a tight angle.
Millwall's Joe Bryan was sent off after taking out Callum Lang with a late challenge, but despite going down to 10 men the Lions managed to pull one back as Mihailo Ivanovic netted from a corner.
But Pompey sealed the win in the 90th minute as Jordan Williams ran from his own half before producing a brilliant finish from the edge of the box.
The result lifts Portsmouth one place to 19th in the table and extends the gap to the bottom three to seven points while Millwall remain seventh despite the defeat.
The first real opportunity of the game fell to Portsmouth in a the swirling wind and rain at Fratton Park.
Josh Murphy whipped in a cross from the right and the ball bounced up for Regan Poole who attempted a shot on goal but the defender sliced his effort, which was eventually cleared.
Pompey then started to build wave after wave of attack, forcing Millwall deeper into their own half, and they took the lead on 22 minutes.
Murphy made a run down the left before laying the ball off to Swanson who took one touch to set himself before rifling it into the top left-hand corner from around 25 yards.
It was the full-back's fifth goal for the Blues since joining from Arsenal in 2022.
Millwall suffered a blow as Zak Sturge took a ball to the face while looking to stop a cross by Florian Bianchini.
The full-back fell and spent several minutes on the floor before being carried off on a stretcher to where an ambulance team was stationed.
Millwall almost got themselves straight back into the game after the break as Macaulay Langstaff's effort was deflected narrowly wide of the near post.
It was the home side who were able to add to their lead minutes later as Murphy played a low through ball in behind the Lions defence.
Segecic then dinked the ball towards the back post and his effort looped up high and over Crocombe before dropping into the back of the net.
Bryan was shown a straight red card in the 67th minute for taking out Lang but Millwall halved their deficit despite the numerical disadvantage thanks to Ivanovic's smart right-footed shot.
But Williams ensured Pompey's victory in style, intercepting a pass on halfway before running all the way to the edge of the Millwall box where he struck a right-footed effort into the back of the net.
We made it nervous for ourselves - Mousinho
Portsmouth boss John Mousinho:
"I rated the performance really highly [but] I know there'll be some disappointment in the fact that when Millwall went down to 10 men and we had that two-goal lead that we didn't put the game to bed.
"We made it really nervous for ourselves for that 15-20 minute period but I still thought we'd done so many of the things that we wanted to do properly and we were very positive.
"I thought we committed really well so if the game had spun the other way in the last 10 minutes obviously there would been a huge amount of frustration but I thought the performance was definitely there.
"We've got the two right-backs playing out of position at left-back, it's a really nice bonus for us that they scored, I'm really pleased for the pair of them."
Mousinho: ‘That felt like much more of a Portsmouth performance’
Millwall 'had to overcome a lot of challenges' - Neil
Millwall boss Alex Neil:
"Today's a real disappointment but we've had to overcome a lot of challenges today.
"The nature of the goals, particularly the second and the third for me, were extremely frustrating because I thought we should have done better.
"I think it's very dubious for the sending-off but Joe should not give them the opportunity to do that. I think the reaction of the players, the reaction of the fans, it doesn't surprise me that the referee's got out the red card.
"I know it sounds like excuses but I've been at this level a long time and when you are depleted in so many different areas and you're missing your captain, it's really difficult to win games at this level and that was a hard day for us today."
