Real Sociedad set up a Copa del Rey final against Atletico Madrid after Mikel Oyarzabal's late penalty saw off rivals Athletic Club.

Pellegrino Matarazzo's side had a 1-0 lead from last month's first leg thanks to Benat Turrientes' goal at Estadio de San Mames.

Athletic Club, without the injured Nico Williams, could not find a goal to mount a comeback at Estadio Municipal de Anoeta in the Basque derby.

Then Spain international Oyarzabal stepped up to put away a spot-kick, as referee Cesar Soto Grado gave a penalty following a video assistant referee review of a shirt pull on midfielder Yangel Herrera by Athletic Club substitute Inigo Ruiz de Galarreta.

Real Sociedad will face Diego Simeone's side, having reached their seventh final in a competition they have won just twice in their history.

Atletico reached the decider despite suffering a 3-0 defeat by Barcelona on Tuesday night as they progressed 4-3 on aggregate.

Despite needing to score to get themselves back in the tie, Athletic Club struggled to create chances and it was the hosts who came closest in the first half with Carlos Soler forcing goalkeeper Alex Padilla into a decent stop from a free-kick.

Goncalo Guedes then fired a chance into the side netting before half-time.

Real Sociedad midfielder Yangel Herrera headed a corner over for the home side in a second half short of real chances.

Inaki Williams was Athletic Club's brightest spark but he could not inspire them to find an equaliser in the tie while Alex Berenguer fired wide from inside the area before Oyarzabal sent Padilla the wrong way from the spot in the 87th minute.

Real Sociedad last reached the Copa del Rey final in 2020 but that was played behind closed doors because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

This will be their first final in front of fans since the 1988 decider, when they lost to Barcelona.
