Holders Arsenal held on to secure an aggregate victory over rivals Chelsea and reach the Women's Champions League semi-finals - despite conceding a late goal to Sjoeke Nusken.

Renee Slegers' side - 3-1 up from the first leg of their quarter-final - produced a mature display at Stamford Bridge even though they ended up losing on the night.

The visitors had a goal disallowed late on as Smilla Holmberg was offside before teeing up Stina Blackstenius to head in from close range, and Beth Mead struck the post in stoppage time.

That came during a frantic period in which Gunners keeper Daphne van Domselaar made two impressive late saves at the other end - the first to beat away a Lauren James shot before Veerle Buurman turned the follow-up against the post, and then to push a Nusken header on to the same upright.

Nusken eventually scored in the fourth minute of stoppage time to go but Chelsea - who needed to score twice to bring the teams level - could not find the victory they needed.

And in a frantic finish, Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor was sent off - as she vented her anger at a hair-pull on Alyssa Thompson by Arsenal's Katie McCabe, who received only a yellow card.

These games are about big moments and without a doubt Arsenal were the better team in those big moments.

In terms of chances Chelsea created more but you see that they also left themselves wide open, so on the balance it goes towards Arsenal. It wasn't an all-out attacking display but over the two legs they were the more consistent team.

Chelsea just weren't clinical enough. The goalkeeper made three big saves but they could have scored three, four, five. They could have scored three in the first half.

They did play well, they possessed the ball well, but at the end of the day it's about scoring goals and getting over the line. They didn't do that in the first leg, ended up 3-1 down, and had to do it again today and didn't do that.

Arsenal allowed Chelsea to have the ball, they were comfortable in their block and defensively worked really ard.

With the opportunities that they had they could even have gone on and won the game, so they will be really proud of the performance.

It showed a different side to Arsenal tonight, it showed what they can do when they have to defend.

Chelsea came into it. Getting the goal and the opportunities gave them momentum but it just wasn't enough.

Chelsea did nowhere near enough throughout the game.

Arsenal were tactically spot on but I thought some of the in-possession play from Chelsea was at nowhere near the level some of those players are capable of.

"At this stage of the competition, you have to be clinical when you create the chances. We hit the post again tonight and created enough to win.

"We were strong defensively tonight compared to the first leg. We contained Arsenal and they are a really good team so that is a tough thing to do.

"But we didn't score enough and that is why we did not qualify."

When you speak about experience it is about what you live through as a team, and that is what Arsenal have done this season. They have lived through tough moments.

We have been hypercritical of them because of the investment that they have had as a team, but they have matured together and solved problems together.

All the Chelsea chances came from James being involved in some way or another. She was at the heart of Everything.

For me Chelsea are at their best when they are putting crosses into the box and getting bodies in the middle.

They pushed and pushed but there are fine margins at this level and you've got to take your chances.

Arsenal boss Renee Slegers speaking to BBC Two: "Very happy. It was a very hard scenario going into this game with a 2-0 lead. The three games before this game had been very tight with small margins.

"We were preparing for this again. So proud of the players, mostly from a mentality perspective - how they managed this game. Really proud of the mentality again."

On Chelsea starting fast: "We tried to counter that by being fast ourselves. It was small margins. Was the ball going to go through or not. The 0-0 mentality was really important for us because we thought it was going to be really hard to defend something for 90 minutes against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge so we went into it 0-0 in our heads."

On Alessia Russo playing in the 10 role: "She played in the nine in the last game against Tottenham and scored three goals. Alessia is just a fantastic player. I have the luxury now of where we visualise the way the game going and who do we need in each position and that's everything - attacking, defending, set pieces.

"If you look at the way they have been working together, they have a really good partnership, Stina [Blackstenius] and Alessia."

On Katie McCabe's hair pull on Alyssa Thompson: "I have seen the still picture back. I didn't see the incident on the pitch when it was happening but I did see Katie going to Alyssa to apologise. My assumption is it's not intentional but it is of course unlucky. I have to watch it back before I comment more."

On McCabe's hair pull on Thompson in the latter stages:

I was really shocked that VAR didn't send the referee to review it and have a look. It does look very cynical.

We've seen it before with a hair pull and it's a straight red card, so it has to go to review.

We don't know if it could have had an impact but there was a minute to go and Thompson was flying down that wing. Could she have crossed the ball in and [Chelsea] have scored? Could it have gone to extra time? We don't know.

If it was pulled back and reviewed and McCabe got a red card then Chelsea have a free-kick with Arsenal down to ten. Anything could have happened.

I mean it doesn't look great does it? Chelsea had just scored, Thompson was driving with the ball. It is really, really cynical and it doesn't look great.

We know that McCabe is a real physical player. You can't be doing that. If that's in any other game it either goes to VAR or it's a straight red card on the pitch.

It is disappointing to see and you also don't want to see what happens on the sidelines. You want the game to be fair.

On if she spoke to the referees after the game: "No, I don't want to speak to them because it's always the same story.

"Even if I go and speak to them, they will not give me a clear answer. It's difficult for me because I don't want to be the only one talking about this situation.

"But everyone needs to understand that's the difference between being qualified and not being qualified. It has a big impact on players.

"I'm really proud of my players, I think they gave everything and they don't deserve that level of refereeing again."

On Alyssa Thompson's reaction: "She was crying. She's trying her best on the pitch in both games and it is not good enough, when you are playing football and someone pulls your hair, it's bad.

"Of course, she was crying and emotional with that situation and the result."

"In terms of performance we did what we had to do, we created a lot of opportunities but we didn't score. That is the reality. That is why we are not qualified for the semi-finals.

"But a lot of emotions because I think at the end of the game, some decisions were really controversial."

On Katie McCabe's hair pull on Alyssa Thompson: "For me, it is clearly a red card for the Arsenal player. She's pulling Alyssa Thompson's hair. If the VAR is not able to check that situation, I don't know why we have the VAR.

"She doesn't have a red card - it is clearly a red card - and, yeah, I go on my emotions. I shouldn't but, at the end, I'm the one with the red card.

"If you look at all the decisions in the first leg and second leg, that's part of the result at the end. That's really disappointing."

Chelsea defender Lucy Bronze, speaking to BBC Two: "There's not much more we could do across both legs. We were the better team but not the most clinical. That was the difference. They had clinical finishes in the first game which gave us an uphill battle against a top team. We knew we could get the win tonight which is obviously what we did but too many missed chances and crossbars."

On the post-match team talk: "It was quite logical. We could be proud of what we did. There's not much more we could do. The keeper made some really good saves. We can be proud of ourselves, we were the better team, we won the game today. We need to take that energy and focus into the end of the season because there's still things to play for."

On whether a Champions League title: "Not far. The competition has tightened up and the first leg killed us a bit. We went toe-to-toe with Arsenal who are the current champions and we beat them tonight and should have had better result in the first leg.

"It depends on each game and who turns up. Last year, every one had Barca as the favourites but Arsenal went on the day and clinched it. That's the Champions League, you have to show up and be counted and score the goals."

After her string of superb saves tonight Arsenal keeper Daphne van Domselaar was awarded the player of the match award.

Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor, during her interview with the BBC, has her phone in her hand and shows a video clip to the camera of the moment Katie McCabe pulled Alyssa Thompson's hair.

"Why do we have VAR?" says a furious Bompastor, who got two yellow cards and then a red card herself for complaining about the decision, while McCabe's foul went completely unpunished.

Arsenal didn't have the start to the season that they would have liked but they have grown and grown, built this maturity and togetherness. The fans were incredible again tonight and the players put on this big, big performance for them to take them into the semi-finals.

Arsenal captain Kim Little speaking to BBC Two: "So special to be back in this competition and make it to the semi-finals again. To come here, knowing it was hard to come with a 3-1 lead. We know from last year, in a slightly different position this year in being ahead.

"We tried to prepare as best we could for the scenarios and not sit off. Some things went our way but we defended extremely well and created chances as well. A great effort to stop a great Chelsea team.

"We defended incredibly well and found the gaps when we could, we could have been a bit more clinical but I don't want to talk about that, we're through to the semis.

"You can't always have a perfect game but we have an incredible squad of players who are so dynamic. We try and use that as best we can. As a team we are growing a lot and I think we are getting better and better, which I think you can see."

On slow start to the season: "We haven't had the start to the season that we wanted but we have grown as the season has gone and been really dominant in competitions. Ultimately that's not good enough. You want to be consistent and league champions. We need to make sure we are consistent and on it. We discuss that about how we have better starts."

On defending their title: "It would be nice to do it two years in a row, we'll give it all we can."
