All this talk about Carrick seems to forget that it's not just him, but his backroom team as well. I'm sure Steve Holland, Woodgate et al are also having a massive effect on the team, and if Carrick gets the job I'll be happy to still have them too.

If Aston Villa do maintain their challenge, they will have to do it without injured captain John McGinn, who could be out for up to two months.

The midfielder was forced off early in last week's defeat by Everton with a knee injury.

It means the Scotland international could miss up to nine games as third-placed Villa try to maintain their Premier League title push and Europa League hopes.

"Normally, he is going to be out for some weeks, maybe even one or two months. But I want to wait for the doctor's opinion on it," boss Unai Emery said.

McGinn's injury comes with Boubacar Kamara expected to miss the rest of the season with a serious knee injury he suffered in the FA Cup win at Tottenham earlier this month.

Youri Tielemans also hobbled off during Sunday's win at Newcastle leaving Villa with a midfield injury problem.

"It was his ankle. Hopefully not a lot, but we must check him with the doctor and wait. I can't say anything more," Emery added, following the victory at St James' Park.

Aston Villa clearly showing they mean business this season, but we clearly need a stronger bench to compete on three fronts. Hopefully Tammy Abraham gets over the line, but we need another experienced midfielder. Maybe Douglas Luiz back on loan if the deal could be done?

I think Opta has had a malfunction if Aston Villa have better percentages than Manchester City to win the league. I’m a United fan.

  5. Can Man City and Villa close the gap?published at 14:52 GMT 26 January

Aside from the leaders Arsenal, Aston Villa and Manchester City are the only two teams Opta give a considerable chance of winning the Premier League in their predictions - albeit only a slim chance for each.

Arsenal play first out of the three of them this weekend, away at Leeds, therefore any dropped points would allow Villa to close the gap further on Sunday when they face Brentford.

City will know the result of both of those games by the time they kick off against Spurs at teatime on Sunday.

  6. Greatest title chasespublished at 14:50 GMT 26 January

While Arsenal’s seven-point advantage prior to the weekend was an enviable one, history suggests they were never going to be able to rest easy.

There have been seven previous Premier League seasons in which a team has come from at least seven points behind after 22 games to win the title.

On one of those occasions, Arsenal trailed Manchester United by 11 points after 22 games - it had been 13 points at the midway point of the season, with a game in hand - but ended up winning the title by a point.

Carrick has to show he can beat lesser teams. City were awful, Arsenal lost to a total gift and two worldies. Yes United competed but they weren’t the better side, they were fortunate and Arsenal’s attacking issues were laid bare again.

  8. Arsenal's open-play strugglespublished at 14:46 GMT 26 January

    Alex Howell
    BBC Sport Arsenal reporter

Arsenal have been excellent this season but it's fair to say that, despite their strong position in the Premier League and the Champions League, their attack hasn't really fired this season.

Gabriel Martinelli and Viktor Gyokeres are the joint top goalscorers in all competitions with nine each.

Gyokeres was signed for a £64m deal in the summer but has only managed five goals in the Premier League.

The Gunners have been excellent from set-pieces, scoring 13 goals via set-pieces this season in the Premier League, the most of any team excluding penalties.

They have scored 42 goals in the league, which is the second most in the division, but they rank 17th for their percentage of goals from open play, which is 57.1%.

Whereas they have the fourth highest percentage of goals from set-pieces in the Premier League (35.7%).

This may only be a wobble from Arsenal as they look to win the title for the first time since 2004, but Mikel Arteta will be hoping he can get one of his forwards firing to make it more comfortable.

Modern Premier League teams can be over-coached. That was Arsenal yesterday. They were fearful of making mistakes. In contrast, United looked like they were free to play and to take risks. Wonderful to watch and refreshing as a Manchester United fan. Players in the right position, playing with passion and enjoyment.

    Nick

Looking at the Man Utd line-up it looks like they have a full squad to choose from. If they lose Martinez and Shaw (again) they will struggle. They recruited well up front and now need to re-balance the squad.

  10. The noise of worried Arsenal fanspublished at 14:41 GMT 26 January

    Arsenal 2-3 Man Utd

    Alex Howell
    BBC Sport Arsenal reporter

Arsenal dominated the game against Manchester United up until they took the lead, but worryingly for Mikel Arteta that is when things turned the wrong way for his side.

The Gunners were sloppy in possession and the error from Martin Zubimendi to gift Manchester United a goal really played on the home fans' fears that they might not win the title after being in a dominant position for so long this season.

Arsenal have finished in second place for three successive seasons and that desperation to win can be felt from the home crowd when things aren't going their way.

Mikel Arteta has previously described it as a "willingness to win" and players have also said that they are desperate to win.

But that desire to succeed so badly can lead to anxiousness in the crowd.

Just like last night, there have been audible groans when Arsenal are not in front and there are loose passes in matches.

There were even boos at the final whistle as the first home loss of the season was confirmed.

Arteta will need to find a way to lift his players and to also get the crowd backing his team when they are in difficult moments.

Many pundits and fans against keeping Carrick basing it on Ole's time - didn't work then, so won't work now. Since Fergie, every type of manager has tried & failed: those with Premier League experience, internationally recognised, proven winners, promising up-and-comers. IF Carrick can keep this up, then why not?

  13. Can Arsenal avoid repeat of past slip-ups?published at 14:32 GMT 26 January

The Gunners have been Premier League leaders at this stage of a season on three previous occasions but only went on to lift the title once – the ‘Invincibles’ season of 2003-04, when they finished unbeaten.

They had a two-point lead after 23 matches back then. That was also the case in 2022-23, with Mikel Arteta’s side extending their lead to eight points after 29 games, having played one more than Manchester City, only to capitulate during the run-in.

Arsenal’s biggest advantage after 23 fixtures was a five-point lead in 2002-03; they eventually finished five points adrift as Manchester United regained the title.

  14. Precedent favours Arsenalpublished at 14:30 GMT 26 January

The Premier League leaders have been at least four points clear at this stage of the season on 20 previous occasions – all but four of those went on to become champions.

Newcastle famously blew a 12-point lead in 1995-96, while Manchester United relinquished a five-point advantage over Arsenal in 1997-98 before the roles were reversed five years later. Liverpool held a four-point lead in 2019 and were unbeaten over their remaining 15 games, winning 11, but were still edged out by a relentless Manchester City.

If we rewind a week, to when Arsenal’s lead was seven points, no side this century has blown a comparable advantage after 22 matches. In Premier League history, only Newcastle in 1996 and Manchester United in 1998 – with respective leads of nine and seven points – have failed to win the title from a position similar to Arsenal’s prior to last weekend.

Arsenal aren't misfiring. They've scored 15 goals in their 7 games in January. Two goalless draws, but in the rest they've scored at least two goals. They are not misfiring, it's their defence that is now beginning to crumble

    James

Arsenal's defenders need to get the ball forward much more quickly to give the front three more space to work in. When Manchester United got the ball they moved it forward quickly to give the strikers goal-scoring chances. Wake up Mr Arteta.

However tongue-in-cheek that debate may be, if United keep on winning under Michael Carrick then murmurings with only intensify.

Likewise, if Arsenal's "blip" continues this weekend then Aston Villa and Manchester City - who are best placed to challenge - will be buoyed.

Michael Carrick's 100% win record is the start he would have dreamed of.

Speaking to BBC's Match of the Day, Manchester United's interim manager confirmed that "nothing's changed" in his plan when asked if he hopes to stay at the club as permanent head coach.

"I've been here less than two weeks, and I'm desperate to do well and improve the team and finish as high as we can," said Carrick, sidestepping the question.

Before Ole Gunnar Solskaer was offered the manager role at Manchester United on a permanent contract in 2019, the former Norwegian international won 14, drew two and lost three games - a 73.7% win ratio in all competitions.

"Having days like this and last week is something you get greedy for, and we want to keep building on this for weeks to come," added Carrick.

Manchester United have momentum now and all of a sudden you're looking at United and thinking they have a great chance of top four.

Anyone can win two games. Even if they do get into fourth, I still wouldn't be convinced he [Michael Carrick] is the man for the job.

I still think they need a bigger and better manager.
