Aston Villa manager Unai Emery, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "[This is] a very difficult place. Today we deserve it but it was a very tough match. Our game plan was progressively getting better in 90 minutes. I think now the first match after pre-season some players are not fit to play 90 minutes. I think today their attitude, commitment was fantastic."

On strength in depth: "The idea is to try to have players in the bench as well with the qualities played in the starting 11. This year we are improving our level facing the Champions League. Of course we want to keep the same position competing the way we did last year and we have to be very demanding with our players. We are ready to play the next match at home against Arsenal on Saturday and we showed a little bit the different possibilities in the squad. The impact of Jhon Duran was very important because he still wasn't fit to play 90 minutes, Ollie Watkins."

On Jhon Duran: "We believe in him and he has to play, he has to be ready to train every day like he was doing the last week and like he trained today. For me we need two strikers and both have to have good performances and good commitment to play like they both played today."

West Ham United

West Ham manager Julen Lopetegui speaing to BBC Radio 5 Live: "I feel bad. We lost. I have to feel bad. When you lose the feeling is not very good. In the same time we did good things too. We played against one of the best teams in last season's Premier League.

"They have a very strong team and improved this summer but after this it was a pity that we concede one goal in one set-piece at the start of the game. We were able to overcome this bad moment.

"After 20 minutes [of the second half], we had a bit of a lull and we suffered in this moment when they scored again. We had two chances but we didn't do so it is a pity for us."

What is there to improve? "We have to know that the first minute is as important as the 90th. We have to put the focus in this part of the match and try to improve. I think we have the strength to be stronger in this area and in the same way, I think we have to be positive in good things too."

How did it feel to stand there as West Ham manager? "We have a very big stadium and fantastic fans. All of them have a big commitment to us. That is why it is a bit disappointing to not get a better score today because they deserve it. My feeling was that we have this energy and this commitment. We have 37 games in front of us and today is a bad day but we have to wake up with the same energy to face the next challenge."

Aston Villa

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery, speaking to Sky Sports: "I think the first 30 minutes were very good. We were in control of the game, with good positioning. We didn’t concede a corner until the 28th minute. We scored one and had a chance to get a second with Leon Bailey.

"They got a goal too, and we started the second half a bit softly. But we started controlling the game more again and deserved to win."

On Jhon Duran’s goal: "It was a very important goal. He’s completely involved with us after coming back from his holidays and after [representing] his national team. There will be more rumours about him after his goal, but I believe in him. I gave him 30 minutes today and he’s very important to us."

On whether Duran will stay: "I don’t know."

On Amadou Onana: "There’s still a lot of adaptation ahead, in training and in matches. Today it was his first official match with us. He was very mature, responsible and intelligent. I think this is the first step we need. The adaptation is going to be long, because there are a lot of things we want to get out of him, but his potential is most important."

Aston Villa midfielder Amadou Onana, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "Unbelievable feeling. We spoke about it yesterday and I was like 'watch me I'm going to score today'. I think if you manifest it, it kind of works so very happy with that today."

On what the result does for the team: "West Ham are a tough team to play but I think we could never have done it any better. Starting with three points away gives a massive confidence to the whole team so I'm happy tonight."

On whether Villa were frustrated at half-time: "Frustrated, yeah. I think we didn't lose our focus and I think you saw it in the first minutes of the second half. We kept doing what we did in the first half and we did fantastically well so I'm just happy with the overall team performance."

On playing under Unai Emery: "For sure. I think he played a massive part in me coming to this football club. I think his football IQ, his knowledge, what he can bring to me is just phenomenal. I think I can learn a lot playing under him."

All four of Amadou Onana’s Premier League goals have been headers from corners, with his effort today making him the 27th different player to have scored on their Premier League debut for Aston Villa, the joint-most of any side (also Chelsea).

West Ham United

More from West Ham manager Lopetegui, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "At the start of the match we made a big gift for them. They had more confidence and energy. We had the last 20 minutes under control and had a good chance to score the second goal, but didn't.

"We suffered with their second goal, but after that we had two clear chances [to equalise]. We didn’t [take them] and we have to keep the good things. It’s a pity for us and for our fans – we had big expectations and ambitions for this match.

"For a lot of players it was their first match in our stadium. Max [Kilman] did well. Guido [Rodriguez] too. A lot of them have to improve and push the players in the line-up to be more competitive. We have to learn from the bad things and keep the good things we have.

"We tried to be competitive against a very good team, but we only scored one and they scored two, so we lost."

West Ham manager Julen Lopetegui, speaking to Sky Sports: "In the second half we started well, we had the initiative. Maybe in the last moments we don't take the right decisions. They get to score a second goal. I am not happy again because we suffered one goal in set-pieces that in these kinds of matches these little details are going to be key.

"To keep the good things and be able to overcome and improve the things and other things for sure. It was a pity. After we suffered a second goal we had very clear chances two. But this is about the goals, they scored two and us only one and we lost.

"We have to keep the good things and know we were able to press and keep the initiative.

On how West Ham can improve: "Sometimes you have to review the match to have a more clear opinion but unfortunately we're going to have a lot of things to improve as all the team. Against a big team like Aston Villa, above all in the second half we have a big opportunity to win the match and we lost. We have to learn and improve in the next step."

On substitutions: "I think that after 75 minutes they are suffering a lot so we make the changes thinking that we need more energy in the pitch. I think all of them can make a big effort. There are the good things we have to keep and improve and think in the next step."

On the importance of players on the bench: "I think I always hope more about the bench players because all of them have to be ready because they are key. I think today the first three changes, two of them were new signings too so maybe it's not easy for them but they have to adapt as soon as possible."

This was Aston Villa's first opening-weekend wn in the Premier League since beating Sheffield United 1-0 in 2020.

They had lost the last three - including 5-1 to Newcastle last season.

West Ham forward Jarrod Bowen, speaking to Sky Sports: "On another day, [our chances] go in and it’s a different story. The first goal was a gift. Lucas took his goal really well and we controlled the game a little bit more in the second half. We had some really good chances to go ahead in the game, but didn’t.

"This is the first game but there are 37 more. We need to go to Crystal Palace [next weekend] with the same fight, the same intensity.

"We got into some really good positions. At times we gave the ball away, at times we just didn’t put the ball in the net. You never want [to lose] the first game of the season, but we need to pick ourselves up before another tough game.

"With the spirit we have in the group, we knew we were fighting back. That was the penalty, and we gained more confidence with the goal. We felt we were in a really good position [to win]. On another day, we’d be standing here with a win.

"There are positives to take, for sure, but we’re in the results business. There are lots of positives and lots of things to work on going into our next game.

"We have exciting players. It’s an exciting time with a new manager and new ideas. There were signs that things are clicking and coming into play. Now it’s down to us to go out and show it."

Aston Villa midfielder Youri Tielemans speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live: "We took some good chances and we deserved to win.

"I think that is football and sometimes these chances go in and sometimes not. We kept creating chances and pushing. We are very happy.

"The substitutes made a massive difference. I think we had a bit of a dip at that point and the manager made the changes at the right time. The three off them combined for that goal. We have some great players and we are ready to perform."

What are your ambitions this season? "We will have to wait and see because it is only the first game. We have a lot of ambition and we want to build on that. We want to be the best we can be."

Jhon Duran has now scored six Premier League goals from just 616 minutes played, an average of one every 103 minutes.

Among players to have scored five or more Premier League goals, only Erling Haaland (85) has a better minutes-to-goals rate.

Aston Villa midfielder Youri Tielemans, speaking to Sky Sports: "It was very tight in the second half, first half as well. West Ham are a good team. To come here and win is massive for us. It gets us off to a good start and now we can look forward to next week. We can enjoy this win because it was a tough battle today.

"I think it was just about being clinical and we did that. We had a massive block at the end on the line for us. It was really important for us to get the win today."

On the changes to the midfield: "It's just about the system. The players coming in have worked out. The manager has been working really hard on the training pitch and we've just done what the manager asked of us so we're really happy."

On what's helping Amadou Onana to settle in: "To play his game. He's got loads of confidence, loads of qualities. He's just exposed all of that today. Hopefully he can carry on and become even better than he is."

On the challenges of the new season: "There's loads of expectations around us now, we finished fourth last season. It's not by a miracle. We work really hard, we have a good system in place. Then it's all about winning games and we did that.

"We have experience, a good team, young players, some new players. We work really hard on the training pitch, we've had a good pre-season, and we're ready to go."

Jhon Duran annoyed a lot of Villa fans earlier in the summer after crossing his arm in the style of West Ham's Hammers crest in a social media video.

West Ham have lost their opening fixture of a Premier League campaign for the 16th time, at least four more than any other club. Newcastle United and Southampton are next on 12.
