Scotland went down with a fight in the Boston heat, rallying in the second half after conceding a goal with just 70 seconds on the clock.

They couldn't manage a shot on target, which is disappointing, but did have a couple of penalty shouts waved away by an erratic referee.

Morocco were impressive in the first half and may have been able to find more gears had Scotland been more of a threat.

Scotland are heading for third place in Group C, with one more game to come against Brazil on Wednesday.

Get anything from the five-time champions in Miami and progress is pretty much guaranteed.

If Scotland finish on three points, then there will be a long wait for the other groups to finish.

Morocco threatened to blow Scotland away early on, but Steve Clarke's squad showed their resilience, writes Tom English.

BBC Sport Scotland's Liam McLeod and James McFadden analyse the three key decisions that went against Scotland during their World Cup Group C 1-0 defeat against Morocco.

Steve Clarke mentioned the first-half pull on Che Adams from Issa Diop and our pundits reckon the Fulham defender was fortunate to stay on the pitch.

"For me, it is [a red card]," Neil McCann said. "Che Adams is goal-side and he's clearly pulled back.

"I think with the flight of the ball, he's going to get onto it and there's no-one on the cover."

And former Scotland hero James McFadden agrees: "He's running onto it, straight towards goal. It's 100% an obvious goal-scoring opportunity.

"If the referee deems it a foul, he has to send him off."

There's been moments of frustration, moments you wish we could control better. But the reality is these tournaments are never easy. It's never easy playing the best teams in the world.

Brazil will pose a different challenge but it's another opportunity to make history. On the face of things, it feels like we've learned lessons.

I've enjoyed the bravery as the games have gone on, and bravery is what epitomised that performance in the second half.

"The worst possible start," he said. "If you give a team of Morocco's quality that time and space to hurt, they'll do it.

"But we showed character after that. We probably need to be better in certain areas, we know that. But we were right in the game, we had chances and big moments at big times.

"We were right in the game until the end but it's not enough. We go into the game against Brazil knowing we need to win to go through, or maybe even just a point."

"We feel disappointed, feel as if we can bring more to the game, bring our qualities," Scotland midfielder John McGinn tells BBC Sport.

"We could have been helped at times by the ref with 50-50 challenges, decisions. No problem with allowing things to flow but it has to be consistent across both teams.

"Sometimes that goes for you. If we got a couple of those penalty decisions for us, I don't think VAR intervenes.

"Out the corner of my eye, I could see [the Morocco defender] charging in. I got first contact to the ball and he took me out. It's a penalty kick for me. Sometimes you get them, sometimes you don't. If it was given on the field, no chance it's overturned.

"Morocco have got away with one there. But we need to be better and create chances from open play, not rely on referee's decisions."

Scotland striker Che Adams tells BBC Scotland: "Towards the end we were pushing for the equaliser. We didn't manage to get there but it was a proud performance, let down by the early goal which was a sucker punch.

"We reacted well and we were unlucky not to get the goal in the end.

"We just have to believe. We put in a good performance there towards the end. There's confidence there to build on and that's what the boys are thinking about."

That's Brazil 2-0 up on Haiti.

It looks very much like Scotland are going to end the evening in third place in Group C.

Scotland completed 388 passes in the sticky Boston heat.

Brazil have just gone 1-0 up against Haiti.

With eight of the 12 third place teams going through in this expanded World Cup, three points might be enough.

Scotland's goal difference is level after a 1-0 win and a 1-0 defeat.

According to last week's calculations from Football Meets Data, external, a goal difference of -1 offers an 87.5% chance of progression. That drops to 69.4% with a -2 difference, and 47.3% at -3.

Scotland substitute and striker Lyndon Dykes tells BBC Scotland: "We're disappointed because we didn't win the game but there was some positives at the end there. We showed good character, and we've still got more one game.

"We were putting on a lot of pressure, being braver and getting bodies higher up the pitch. We were just unfortunate not to get that clear cut chance. We have to perform against Brazil now, but I believe in my team and the manager."

Let's not forget Morocco are a classy side - now unbeaten in 31 games.

But Scotland did not register a single effort on target.

That's only happened once before for Scotland at a World Cup, in the 1-0 defeat to Denmark in 1986.
