Thierno Barry scored his first Everton hat-trick as the Premier League side thrashed Preston North End in the Carabao Cup to set up a home third-round tie against Wolves.

Summer signing Brennan Johnson also ended his goal drought with his first for the Toffees as David Moyes' side cruised past the Championship club.

Moyes, who spent four years as Preston manager, fielded a strong Everton side with only three changes from their opening-weekend win against Crystal Palace.

The Blues dominated from the off and Barry broke the deadlock in the 25th minute when he tapped home after Vitalii Mykolenko crossed following a superb pass from Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall.

Preston were winless in their first two Championship games of the season and manager Paul Heckingbottom made seven changes from their defeat by Wolves at the weekend, but they could have found a way back into this if Leo Leroy had hit the target with a decent opportunity inside the area.

Tyler Dibling then hit the post while the creative Iliman Ndiaye put in a fine cross for Barry but the Everton forward headed just wide.

Barry did get his second goal just before the hour mark after Dewsbury-Hall's fierce strike was pushed back into the Everton striker's path by Preston goalkeeper Lee Nicholls and he reacted quickly to divert the ball home.

Callum Lang gave Everton keeper Jordan Pickford some work to do with an ambitious overhead kick, but Barry then secured the match ball when he finished off a fine move by turning home substitute Johnson's cross in the 70th minute.

Johnson, who joined from Palace this summer, then scored his first goal since November as he struck a low effort into the net after a through ball from Barry with 18 minutes to go.

Barry has now four goals this season after scoring in the 2-0 win over Palace but he appeared to pick up a knock before he was taken off late on.
