Portsmouth hit back in dramatic fashion at Fratton Park

Andre Dozzell's late equaliser rescued a point for 10-man Portsmouth against fellow strugglers Oxford United in the Championship.

The Blues took the lead inside 10 minutes, when Keshi Anderson's smart touch in the box was followed by a left-footed strike that flew into the net for his first Pompey goal.

Connor Ogilvie was then shown a straight red card for a challenge on Stan Mills - a decision that sparked a furious reaction from the home supporters.

The U's drew level early in the second half when keeper Nicolas Schmid palmed a shot into the path of Brodie Spencer, who fired home.

Will Lankshear gave Oxford the lead with less than 10 minutes to go, heading Michal Helik's cross into the net.

But Dozzell was then on hand to slot the ball in from Millenic Alli's low cross.

The result temporarily moved Oxford above Leicester City who later regained their place after drawing with Sheffield Wednesday, Portsmouth remain 21st.

Pompey made a breakthrough after nine minutes, when a headed pass to Colby Bishop rebounded off his leg to Anderson, who took a smart touch to his left before firing his side into the lead.

The shot flew into the net via keeper Jamie Cumming, who got a hand to the effort but could not keep it out.

Pompey's momentum was then halted when referee Josh Smith produced a straight red card for Ogilvie after a heavy touch forced him to lunge for the ball, catching Mills from behind in the process.

The hosts then had a brilliant chance to double their lead when Jordan Williams played a low cross to Gustavo Caballero in a great position from the left, but he blasted over the bar.

Oxford managed to find a leveller when Mills struck from outside the box and Schmid's save was pushed to Spencer, who was able to divert the ball home.

Plenty of abuse from the home fans was directed towards the referee in the second half because of the red card handed to Ogilvie.

Every foul and decision had them on their feet, which made for a chaotic and breathless affair on the pitch.

Oxford went ahead when Helik swung a delightful cross to the back post, where Lankshear threw himself at the ball and powered it into the top-right corner with a diving header.

But Portsmouth refused to lie down and substitute Alli made a dart down the left and crossed first time to Dozzell, who calmly slotted into the bottom right corner of the net.

'Nothing was decided today' - reaction

Portsmouth boss John Mousinho told BBC Radio Solent:

"In real time I don't think anyone in the stadium was expecting it to be a red card, including Oxford.

"In these games, when stakes are so high, if you are going to do something as monumental as that, I think you have to be 100% sure - and I don't think it's clear cut.

"I'm not going to hide away from the fact that I don't think Connor needs to make the challenge, but if that's a red card then there should be a fair few more.

"It's still extremely tight down the bottom. We wanted to win the game today and I'm not sure the draw helped either side too much.

"In the circumstances, we'll obviously take it, going deep into the game and then getting the equaliser."

Oxford United boss Matt Bloomfield told BBC Radio Oxford:

"We worked so incredibly hard to get our noses in front in the game against a tough opposition in such an incredible atmosphere.

"We feel terribly disappointed that we are not walking away with three points. We need to make sure we improve on conceding late goals like this.

"Nothing was decided today. It's my job now as the leader of the group to pick everybody up and make sure we get ready for the game at the weekend.

"We still have five games to go and we'll keep hunting."
