Excellent Manchester City performance. Managed the game out well once in the lead - a key quality in big away games. A goal in the Bernabeu is another great benchmark for the 'Moston Maldini'!

Noni Madueke was a constant threat off that right-hand side tonight. He likes to come inside and get shots off, and got the second goal by attacking the far post too, which pretty much sealed the game.

Gabriel Martinelli was not so effective off the left but still got a really good goal and overall it was a really good evening for Mikel Arteta when you consider how stretched his squad is and how tired they looked at the weekend.

So for Arsenal to win away like this in the Champions League is a great result for them. In the first half there wasn't really much in it, just the goal from Madueke, and Club Brugge had a few chances but even with Norgaard having to fill in at centre-half, they still looked quite steady.

In the end though it was just about getting three points for Arsenal and avoiding any more injuries and they achieved both of those aims.

They are still top of the Champions League and they still have a 100% record. They know they must be going through and they even have the luxury of maybe resting players now in their next game against Inter, which is exactly where Arteta wants to be.

Ethan Nwaneri is the youngest player to debut for Arsenal at 15 years and 181 days old. The list includes current players Max Dowman, Jack Porter, and Marli Salmon. Former players Cesc Fabregas and Jack Wilshere are also featured.

Mikel Arteta is certainly giving youth a chance at Arsenal.

Some company on there for 16-year-old debutant Marli Salmon to be joining.

I’m thinking maybe Alonso could be the next Liverpool manager? I think his time at Madrid is done! You don’t get time to build things in Madrid but you do in Liverpool if your face fits. It’s a shame, but a club like Madrid demand instant success.

It wasn't just with his goals that Noni Madueke made an impact, he did really well throughout the game and showed he is ready to do a job when he is called upon.

A lot is made of Arsenal's strength in depth this season, and at the moment Arteta has got a few injuries in key positions, but in those wide areas he has got plenty of options and the fact he could bring Madueke and Martinelli off the bench against Villa at the weekend and then start them tonight and see both of them score brilliant goals is a real positive.

More and more, Madueke looks like a really smart signing. I already thought he was a loss to Chelsea, but you are seeing now he is back from injury that Arsenal can have Saka off that right side, or use him - it bodes really well for them with such a busy period coming up.

I think people will talk a lot about Xabi Alonso, but also the media will talk a lot about Xabi.

I don't think there are a lot of things Xabi could have done that he has not done today.

He proved everything with Endrick, with Brahim Diaz. He has no more options in defence. He tried with Rodrygo, who didn't play a lot in the last games, and he was one of the best [players for Real Madrid].

He has no Mbappe, he has seven to eight injured people. I don't think there is a lot of solutions left for Xabi Alonso.

Maybe that is the reason people are focusing on Xabi - they don't think about the other possibilities and solutions that the team has.

Maybe the fault was at the beginning with the construction of this squad.

Arsenal virtually into the last 16 with two games to spare. Last Saturday at Villa Park was a mere bump in the road. This Arsenal squad is the team to beat home and in Europe this season.

    Manchester City

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, speaking to TNT Sports:

"Could be better. So difficult here. Four or five players played for the first time here. Winning here we have to be happy in terms of points especially. We have 13 and it's in our hands to finish in the top eight. That's the target and winning here after Leverkusen is good.

"Matheus [Nunes] was good. Full-backs, Rayan Cherki first time playing here. Nico [O'Reilly] incredible performance. Jeremy [Doku] helped us a lot with many things. We started with a mistake but I was expecting them to press higher but they dropped and we found it hard. But we take it.

"Rodrygo, Vinicius Jr, [Jude] Bellingham, great players. The pace they have up front is so dangerous, that's why you can't stay high you have to be committed int defence. We lacked a little bit so we can improve."

On Erling Haaland: "His numbers speak for itself. We have to find him more, he has to be involved in the game. In the last couple of games he hasn't been in the game so we have to find a way to find him more."

On this win boosting confidence to win the Champions League: "We are not ready. We are away. In February we will be better. These kind of games, we have been here before and played better and lost. The players made a big effort but we still have much to improve."

Really proud of Pep Guardiola, the failures of last season have taught him that it's OK to park the bus for the last 10 minutes when you're playing against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu. He took his time about it, but he's finally learning to adapt.

England and Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham, speaking to TNT Sports:

"We're still trying to work it out within the changing room regardless of what goes on outside. We know that's not helpful. One thing is how we're managing games. Certain points where we have to suffer it feels like we always concede and it puts us on the back foot and makes us have to play a way we don't want to.

"But in the changing room we have what we need to turn it around, we need maybe a bit of luck or maybe something we need to discuss internally. I have faith this season isn't over just because we're in a bad run of form."

Players behind the manager? "100%. The manager has been great. I personally have a great relationship with him and I know a lot of the boys do too. After that run of draws we had some great conversations internally and felt we'd put that form behind us but the last couple of games. No one is downing tools, no one complaining or moaning. We take it on the chin and keep fighting."

On scrutiny on him personally: "Its just life. This is what I've signed up for. I play for the biggest club in the world and one of the most scrutinised countries in the world. I don't want pity, I'm living the dream. I role with the punches and the most important thing is that to me."

Dare I say it, this season Manchester City remind me very much of Manchester United of the later Fergie years. Good-to-great players in most positions, a mix of academy talent sprinkled in and quite direct in their attacking play. Might concede a few but can always score.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta, speaking to TNT Sports: "We know how difficult the Champions League is, and to win away from home especially with that many players out, it makes it bigger.

"Christian Norgaard is someone who probably prepares the best out of all of them. He is someone who makes all of us better every single day. He can play in any position, whether he plays more or less minutes his attitude is immaculate, a really good example for all of us."

On difficulty selecting players: "Madueke and Martinelli were outstanding today, the level of threat and two finishes spectacular. Jesus back after 11 months, to see him perform in the manner he did was really positive.

On seeing Gabriel Jesus return: "There is a moment where you are all alone almost and you have to go through pain and uncertainty. He has gone through that a few times in his career, and it shows his mental toughness and how much he loves to play football. We are delighted to have him back."

On challenges of managing expectations: "Right now it is about managing the situations we have in the backline, some players were there but could not play more than 45 or 30 minutes. To manage that has been tough.

"But with the attitude that the players have, I know that if I ask anyone to play there then they could do it, and they have done a great job."

Is this the end of Xabi Alonso's six-month reign?

BBC Sport's Guillem Balague said before the game that the Spaniard's chances of holding on to his job were "slim" – he is now surely holding on to his position by his fingertips.

A board meeting, which took place after Sunday's loss against Celta Vigo, is never a good sign and they could reconvene again quickly to make a decision.

This was the first managerial meeting of Alonso and Pep Guardiola after working together as player and boss at Bayern Munich, but one that could prove consequential.

Real failed to build on their lead and succumbed once City took control of the contest, with the result dropping them to seventh in the table.
