Filip Krastev equalised for Oxford after Norwich City missed chances to add to their lead

Norwich were denied their first home win of the season by a dramatic last-gasp equaliser from Oxford.

The Canaries had lost all their seven home matches this season, but with new manager Philippe Clement taking charge of his first home game, they looked on course for a welcome win when Jovon Makama powered the ball high into the net in the first half.

However, Filip Krastev denied Norwich victory when he slotted the ball home in the 95th minute, as the longest losing home streak in the Canaries' history ultimately ended in a draw.

Norwich remain second-bottom of the Championship table, five points from the position of safety held by 21st-placed Oxford.

Since being appointed just a week ago, Belgian boss Clement had spoken about "building a house" with his players without good foundations, and the cracks were showing early on when visiting defender Ciaron Brown's header needed a fingertip save from Norwich goalkeeper Vladan Kovacevic.

Early danger at the other end saw U's keeper Jamie Cumming react brilliantly to keep out Josh Sargent's low header, as well as a follow-up strike that was volleyed straight into his path.

Makama was the next Norwich player to sting the palms of Cumming, who was alert to keep out the forward's drive from an angle.

Yet the keeper was narrowly beaten moments later, when Makama belted the ball in after it was chested down to him by defender Ruairi McConville.

Oxford worked hard to create chances, but no-one was there to meet menacing balls flashed across the face of goal by Mark Harris or Hidde ter Avest, while Tyler Goodrham shot tamely at Kovacevic in the second half.

Clement's side looked buoyed and rejuvenated after the break as Sargent blasted a strike at Cumming, who also saved from the well-placed Oscar Schwartau, just after Makama had blazed over from close range.

Such momentum delighted the home fans, who have had so little to cheer so far this campaign, but they were ultimately left frustrated by their team's missed chances.

Just when it looked like Oxford were running out of ideas, substitute Sam Long cut the ball back expertly for the unmarked Krastev to drive it home.

'It's mixed feelings' - reaction

Norwich City boss Philippe Clement told BBC Radio Norfolk:

"It's mixed feelings. Of course, very disappointed for the fans, for the players.

"We deserved to win today, I think it's clear for everybody at the game. On the other side, it's positive what they've shown after just seven days together.

"You see a team who wants to fight, who wants to work, who wants to go for it.

"We created chances to get two or three goals and then the game is finished. But we didn't score them so that's a work in progress for the future.

"I know there is still a lot of work to be done. The team knows too, but you see everybody is working hard."

Oxford United head coach Gary Rowett told BBC Radio Oxford:

"The first 30 minutes, I would say it was as controlled and as composed a performance as we have had for a long time.

"I have been coming here for a long, long time in the Championship and I can't remember a time where actually, we were in their half and felt so comfortable.

"Really disappointed to concede the goal. I felt like it was unfair for us to come in at half-time 1-0 down.

"There were a couple of moments [where] they could have [taken] the game away from us. Then we keep going.

"It is such a competitive group. They won't lay down and accept these games. I am just really pleased with the character."
