Skipper Cameron Brannagan scored his sixth goal of the season
Oxford United continued their fine run against promotion-chasing Hull City, but remain in the Championship relegation zone.
Oxford recovered from conceding after just four minutes to Mohamed Belloumi's goal to level nine minutes later through captain Cameron Brannagan from the penalty spot.
Matt Bloomfield's Oxford side have taken 11 points from their latest six games thanks to this result, and they might have snatched a stoppage-time winner when Mark Harris missed a great chance.
However, Leicester and Portsmouth's draws mean Oxford remain 23rd - a point from safety - and Monday's clash with Pompey at Fratton Park is a huge relegation six-pointer.
Hull disappointed after making such a positive start, but Sergej Jakirovic's men remain fifth and are firmly in the promotion hunt.
Hull made a flying start when Belloumi collected Semi Ajayi's long pass on the right, cut inside Oxford left-back Ruben Roosken and finished left-footed to register his second of the season for the Tigers.
It was a sweet moment for Belloumi as the Algerian's campaign ended at the Kassam Stadium last season in November 2024 when he suffered a serious knee injury.
Oxford might have crumbled, but they levelled when Charlie Hughes scythed down Will Lankshear for the most blatant of penalties and Brannagan fired home his sixth goal of the season.
Lankshear then headed over before Kyle Joseph's shot from Belloumi's pass was saved by Oxford goalkeeper Jamie Cumming.
Oxford grew stronger as Hull wilted and Tigers goalkeeper Dillon Phillips saved a drive from Brannagan.
Ajayi was somewhat fortunate not concede a penalty when he caught Michal Helik in the face as they challenged for a high ball in the box.
Then came Harris' miss in the first added on minute as he steered Stanley Mills' teasing cross just wide of the far post.
'We can't question them' - Bloomfield
Oxford manager Matt Bloomfield told BBC Radio Oxford:
"We assess it by saying that we've created multiple opportunities to win the football match. It hasn't gone our way, but in terms of performance level and endeavour, the way the boys kept creating, kept pressing, kept at it, we can't question them.
"It was obviously very disappointing to go one goal down so early and another team could have possibly wobbled, but our lads are made of sterner stuff, and they kept going.
"Cam stuck the penalty away and we created multiple opportunities.
"I'm just really disappointed for the lads and for the crowd today because everyone was excellent.
"We played against a very good team who are five points off the automatic promotion places, and are going to end the season, probably in the play-offs at the very least.
"Yet we've gone toe to toe with them and created enough chances to win the game."
'It was a very ugly game' - Jakirovic
Hull manager Sergej Jakirovic told BBC Radio Humberside:
"We can be happy with this point because they had very good chances towards the end of this game.
"We began well and took the lead through a very nice goal and then mostly we controlled everything.
"Maybe they know how to use this wind because they played a lot of long balls behind our defence line.
"We struggled there sometimes and we made one mistake in midfield when we lost the ball and they used this immediately to win a penalty.
"After this, for me, it was a very ugly game because it was first ball, long ball, second ball, who will be successful there? I think we lacked creativity, especially on the ball. We must be comfortable on the ball.
"We didn't use the wind in the first half because when you saw the second half, they used it. From 30, 35, 40 metres, they tried to shoot on goal. This is their home ground, so this is expected."
Jakirovic: 'We can be happy for this point'
