Callum Lang has scored two goals in two games for Portsmouth

Portsmouth were denied only their second away win of the Championship season as Derby County came from behind to draw at Pride Park.

Callum Lang produced a fine solo effort after six minutes to put Pompey ahead with their only shot in the first half, cutting in from the right and skipping past three challenges before rifling a powerful drive into the corner from 12 yards.

But the Rams drew level on the stroke of half-time after Joe Ward's low cross was turned into his own net by Hayden Matthews under pressure from Patrick Agyemang, who was poised for a tap-in.

Visiting goalkeeper Nicolas Schmid produced an excellent late save from a close-range Agyemang header to preserve a point for Portsmouth, who move two points clear of the relegation zone, while Derby are within four points of the play-off spots.

Derby responded well to going behind early on and were the better side throughout the first period, with Pompey forced to show resilience.

Ben Brereton Diaz spurned a promising opening for Derby after 31 minutes when he had the chance to lay it off to a clean through Bobby Clark, but the Southampton loanee took a heavy touch and allowed Schmid to claim.

After levelling just before the interval, John Eustace's side would have hoped to kick on for a winner but were left largely frustrated by Pompey in a fairly low-event second half.

Josh Murphy almost caused a moment of panic for Derby goalkeeper Jacob Widell Zetterstrom when his cross had the Swede back-pedalling but it sailed narrowly over the bar.

Andre Dozzell also flashed narrowly wide from the edge of the area in the 65th minute in a rare sight of goal for Pompey, who mustered just four shots and one on target.

Derby struggled to gain any real momentum but did force Matthews into an excellent last-ditch tackle on Agyemang late on, while Dion Sanderson's low cross narrowly evaded the on-rushing Lars-Jorgen Salvesen.

Schmid's injury time save from Agyemang proved to be the last big moment of the game and a vital one at that as Portsmouth held on for just their seventh away point of the season.

'Another point in the right direction' - Eustace

Derby manager John Eustace told BBC Radio Derby:

"I think it's a great point from the way we went a goal down - to get a point is good. Obviously we wanted all three. Really disappointed we didn't win the game, for sure.

"I think in the second half we had to show a bit more composure, a bit more quality, a bit more patience.

"On another day we could've got all three points. But to get another point in the right direction is pleasing but we're halfway through the season, there is so much more hard work to come from the group.

"We're on 31 points now which is not a bad return going into the second half [of the season]."

'We were well worth a draw' - Mousinho

Portsmouth manager John Mousinho told BBC Radio Solent:

"I think it's a good point in the end.

"Obviously the last five or 10 minutes we were hanging on. But not through the whole game.

"I thought we were well worth the point and on another day, not on chance creation but on how well we played, we could have taken all three points."
