Smilla Holmberg's stoppage-time equaliser for Arsenal denied Manchester United a first Women's Super League victory this season.

United had shocked Arsenal by taking the lead midway through the second half when Julia Zigiotti capitalised on an under-hit pass from Georgia Stanway.

But Arsenal kept pushing for an equaliser and eventually got it when Holmberg volleyed a cross from the left into the roof of the net with 90 seconds remaining.

It was a dramatic end to a match in which Manchester United were impressive defensively and put aside the disappointment of their opening two defeats of the season.

The visitors came into the game under heavy criticism for poor displays against London City Lionesses and Chelsea, but this was considerably better.

They were defensively organised, much better in midfield, and were able to cause Arsenal problems on the occasions they did break into the opposition third.

Striker Elisabeth Terland had two of their best chances early on, forcing a double save from goalkeeper Misa Rodriguez.

Arsenal responded as Mariona Caldentey's strike swirled over and Stina Blackstenius' header had to be tipped over the bar by Phallon Tullis-Joyce.

United continued to defend impressively and were rewarded for their efforts when Zigiotti handed them the lead but they could not hold on.

The outcome meant Arsenal extended their WSL unbeaten streak to 20 games, while new United boss Eva Olid must wait for her first victory.

Arsenal analysis: Toothless and almost punished

The main criticism directed towards Arsenal this season has concerned their lack of ruthlessness and their decision-making in the final third. It was no different here.

United were there for the taking, having endured two poor performances to start their campaign, and Arsenal needed to strike while they were vulnerable.

Instead, they allowed their opponents to grow in confidence as Arsenal's attacking play grew stale and predictable.

Leah Williamson's vision from the back opened up United on occasions, and Olivia Smith was busy down the right wing, but Arsenal were largely toothless and were almost made to pay for it.

They relied on a late equaliser to save a point, but this is a result that leaves them trailing leaders Manchester City by four points after just three games of the season.

"Like you say, it's round three in the WSL. There's a lot of games left to play so let's see in May how it ends, but we can only look at ourselves," said manager Renee Slegers.

"If I look at the last two games, not turning that dominance into goals and wins, is something we have to look at. We believe in the quality of the squad and their ideas.

"We can create in a variety of ways. When that starts clicking, it will be really good. It really is about the details in the final third.

"It's not ideal, it's not what we wanted at all to have four lost points, and Manchester City are the only ones with nine points so far."

Pressure will build as their Women's Champions League campaign begins and they travel to Stamford Bridge next Sunday for a feisty London derby against Chelsea in the WSL.

Man Utd analysis: Olid's side show huge progress

After their first two performances of the season, few backed United to get a result at the Emirates.

Their shortcomings were ruthlessly exposed by Chelsea in a 5-0 home loss last weekend, following a disappointing opening defeat by London City Lionesses to start the new era under former Hearts boss Olid.

Olid said criticism was to be expected, but United's fans will have left London full of optimism on Saturday night after a much better display against an Arsenal team many had tipped to win the title.

United's structure was noticeably better as Anna Sandberg and Andrea Medina worked together to minimalise the threat from winger Smith, and goalkeeper Tullis-Joyce stood firm.

Their midfield was more effective, helped by a superb individual performance from Simi Awujo, and Terland provided a threat up front, testing goalkeeper Rodriguez twice in the first half.

Olid's gameplan worked a treat as Arsenal's frustrations grew, gaps opened up and United were poised to exploit them, eventually pouncing on the error from Stanway to take the lead.

It was therefore a blow for them to concede so late on, having done everything right up to that moment. Regardless of the late pain, this was a significant improvement on the first two weeks of the season and gives Olid and her players something to build from.
