Scintillating Falkirk all-but secured a top-six berth in the Scottish Premiership by thrashing woeful Kilmarnock, who remain firmly in relegation danger.

Ethan Brown's own goal from a Calvin Miller cutback, Dylan Tait's close-range finish, and Barney Stewart's header was deserved reward for Falkirk's slick play in a blistering first 35 minutes.

Kilmarnock replied before half-time through Greg Kiltie, but a ragged and haphazard defensive display undid any of their work going forward.

Stewart tapped in his second after a fantastic delivery again from Miller, before Tait lashed in his second goal as both chased hat-tricks.

Stewart came so close to netting his second treble of the season, but could not quite force home at the back post after Ben Broggio's shot rattled the other post.

The emphatic victory means Falkirk move 12 points clear of nearest chasers Dundee United and 13 in front of Aberdeen.

With only 15 points left for those two struggling clubs to play for before the league splits, it now appears inevitable Falkirk will finish in the top half in their first top-flight season since 2010.

Kilmarnock, meanwhile, drop three points behind St Mirren in the race to avoid the relegation play-off as they conceded at least three goals for the fifth time in seven matches.

Analysis: Falkirk devastate vulnerable Kilmarnock

Falkirk have defied the odds all season and this performance encapsulated all the reasons why.

They played expansive football, switching the ball from side-to-side to work overloads in wide areas, where they devastated Kilmarnock from crosses.

Miller has been one of the standouts in the league all season, and his one-two and cross down the left forced Brown to prod by his own goalkeeper for the opener after just 37 seconds.

The winger did similar five minutes into the second half to tee up Stewart's second and kill any notion of a Kilmarnock comeback. They were utterly relentless.

It was a statement victory which effectively - and deservedly - secures their spot in the top six, with Hibs only four points ahead and in their sights.

Kilmarnock's defensive performance will be extremely concerning to manager Neil McCann. It is the fifth time in seven matches they have conceded at least three goals, a trend which cannot continue.

They were alarmingly vulnerable from crosses.

Whether it was the nervousness of goalkeeper Kelle Roos - who parried to the feet of Tait for his first and did not get near the midfielder's second - or their inability to get to the ball first, they were so far off what is needed at this level.

Stewart's first goal, a fantastic header after Coll Donaldson made contact from a corner, was a prime example, while the striker also got his head to the ball before Tait made it 2-0.

Stewart had a further goal disallowed and Falkirk hit the frame of the goal three times, while Roos did also make a few good saves.

It easily could have been worse for Kilmarnock. And though they improved in the Janaury window in attacking areas, not signing a commanding defender looks an oversight.

What they said

Falkirk manager John McGlynn: "It's definitely up there with one of our best of the season. Great to bounce back from defeat by Hearts last week.

"The guys answered me today - they've run and run and run. There was a great tempo about the game and great entertainment for the fans.

"You can hear they're enjoying their football."

Kilmarnock manager Neil McCann: "It doesnt help when you lose a goal in the first minute. We were beaten by the better team today, without question.

"I've got no gripes. Falkirk wanted it more, they were aggressive, up for it and it could have been more.

"We just come up well short. We faced a side that wanted it more, that won't be accepted. It's a sobering day for us and a reality check."

What's next for these teams?

Falkirk will aim to make a special season even better when they face Dundee United in the quarter-finals of the Scottish Cup on Friday night, live on the BBC (19:45 GMT).

Kilmarnock have the weekend off before returning to face leaders Hearts at Rugby Park on Saturday 14 March (20:00).
