Pierre Landry Kabore's double helped Hearts sweep aside undisciplined nine-man Dundee United and move seven points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership.

Kabore tapped home the opening goal on 11 minutes after superb work down the left flank from Harry Milne, and the visitors then profited from two video assistant referee (VAR) interventions before half-time.

First, Don Robertson advised referee Calum Scott to have a second look at a challenge by United winger Amar Fatah on Hearts midfielder Marc Leonard. The initial yellow card was upgraded to red and the hosts were reduced to 10 men.

Things went from bad to worse for the home side five minutes later when Claudio Braga was fouled by Ryan Strain and VAR Robertson intervened to advise the incident was in the box.

Alexandros Kyziridis found the bottom corner, sending debutant goalkeeper Ashley Maynard-Brewer the wrong way.

From there, the result was never really in doubt as Hearts dominated proceedings.

They flooded forward time and time again in the second half and the third goal would have come far sooner were it not for Maynard-Brewer.

Kabore was twice denied by excellent saves, Milne had a drive tipped over the bar and Tomas Magnusson put a free header off target.

United's cause was not helped by substitute Panutche Camara motioning his head towards Leonard, leaving his team with nine players for the final 15 minutes, with coach Dave Bowman also sent to the stands for his protests.

Kabore's deflected strike made it three in the closing stages as the league leaders threw down the gauntlet to their Old Firms chasers.

Derek McInnes' side are seven clear of Rangers and nine clear of Celtic, who face Hibernian and Falkirk, respectively, on Sunday.

Analysis: Kabore steps up when needed for Hearts & United crumble

Oles and "we shall not be moved" were the soundtrack of the evening at Tannadice as the away end revelled in their side's dominant display.

They believe in this team and you can see why. Hearts took full advantage of the opposition's shortcomings and show no signs of abating in this captivating title race.

Much was made of how the Tynecastle outfit would cope without key players Lawrence Shankland and Cammy Devlin through injury, especially when Beni Baningime joined the absentees list through suspension.

But they have coped admirably.

Midfielder Marc Leonard was excellent on his debut as Hearts earned a draw against Celtic last weekend and Kabore stepped up to the plate here in fine style.

He took up a fine position between the posts to knock home Milne's cross and he sniffed out the chance for his second after a bit of a scramble in the United box.

He kept putting himself in the right positions and got his reward as good goal-scorers do and he soaked in the acclaim of the travelling support after the full-time whistle.

For Jim Goodwin's side, this was a worrying display.

Yes Hearts were impressive, but United made their night easier than it might have been with the two red cards and it is now three straight league defeats without scoring a goal.

They are eight points behind Falkirk in sixth and need to buck their ideas up if they have aspirations of a top-half finish.

The one positive to come from the game was the performance of Maynard-Brewer, who made eight saves in total and looked capable of solving what has been a problem position this season.

What they said

Dundee United manager Jim Goodwin tells BBC Sportsound: "I don't think the fans are booing our players or the performance.

"I think they're as frustrated as we are. I can't afford a suspension so I have to be really careful with the words I use to describe the officials.

"It's a bad night for us. Absolutely everything that could have gone against us did.

"We'll have to look at the red cards and see if there's any chance of an appeal but I wouldn't hold out hope."

Hearts boss Derek McInnes tells BBC Sportsound: "I spoke 'before the game] about how difficult the challenge was going to be.

"We had to turn up tonight and do our work well. I thought we settled and controlled the game really well, particularly with Marc Leonard.

"Once we got that first goal, a brilliant goal from Kabore, I thought we showed real authority, maturity and calmness in the game. It just felt like it was going to be our night.

"I thought we were really strong throughout. I thought we started better, imposed ourself on the game and scored good goals."

What's next?

Dundee United travel to Hibernian on Wednesday (19:45), while Hearts go to St Mirren on Tuesday (20:00).
