Sunderland have signed Malmo goalkeeper Melker Ellborg for £3m.

The 22-year-old made seven league appearances for the Swedish club and has also played in the Champions League and Europa League.

His contract with the Premier League side runs until the summer of 2030.

The Black Cats' sporting director, Kristjaan Speakman, said Ellborg had been "producing standout performances" this season and described him as "physically strong" as well as athletic and "composed in possession".

He will join up with his new team-mates at the Stadium of Light immediately but will not be eligable for inclusion in the squad to face Burnley on Monday.

Dutchman Robin Roefs is the club's current number one keeper having signed from NEC last summer.

Ellborg said he had spent the last few days learning about Sunderland as his move was finalised.

"The club has had an excellent season so far, and I'm incredibly happy to be part of this journey," he added.

"I'm aware of Sunderland's history and it means a lot to be part of something with such a rich tradition."
