Plymouth Argyle boss Tom Cleverley has defended the club's transfer policy with the Pilgrims "edging closer" to signing a new midfielder.
The League One side have brought in just one new player in this month's window - Port Vale winger Ronan Curtis.
The Pilgrims have midfielder Bradley Ibrahim out for a significant period with an ankle injury while Middlesbrough youngster Law McCabe returned to his parent club at the start of the month after struggling to make an impact.
It has left Argyle undermanned in that area of the field, especially with Joe Ralls out for the next few weeks.
Cleverley says the club are still having to be careful with their funds after suffering relegation from the Championship last season.
"We can only name a squad of 22 and we're at capacity," the Argyle head coach said.
"We've got space for one more player and if we bring two more players in, one will have to leave.
"We know that we had some losses to fill on the back of a relegation and things like that, so we completely understand that."
Cleverley thinks there could be an outside chance that an additional central defender could also be signed at the end of the window.
He has previously said Argyle will not sign players purely for the sake of it, and says it is important that the club does not waste money.
"I think this club is built on doing things the right way, getting promoted the right way, putting the long-term future and success of the club as a priority, and nothing will get in the way of that," he added.
"You see clubs happy to write off £5-£10 million with ultra-wealthy owners, but what if that owner wants to then take his money out and we've seen real bad cases of that.
"This club's run a lot more strategically and with the long-term vision of the club at heart and unfortunately some transfer windows might suffer for that a little bit in the short term."
