Middlesbrough's England Under-20 international Law McCabe is to return to the Championship club after having his loan at Plymouth Argyle cut short.
The 19-year-old signed a season-long deal with the League One side on transfer deadline day in September.
But he has struggled to break into a Pilgrims side that has been battling at the wrong end of the table.
McCabe has made just 13 appearances in all competitions and last started a game on 29 November.
"I think Law will have learned a lot," Argyle head coach Tom Cleverley said after the 3-0 win over Burton Albion.
"When results are absolutely key and the situation we were in, it didn't benefit Law.
"He couldn't grow into the situation, we needed short-term results [and are] now playing a little bit more direct than we visualised at the start of the season and Law sort of suffered a little bit for that.
"I think he learnt the dark arts, he goes back to Middlesbrough a more experienced player, he'll be a top player in the future because he has very good attributes, good attitude."
With the Pilgrims out of the FA Cup they have a nine-day rest before they face Bristol Rovers in the Vertu Trophy next week.
Cleverley hopes the club will have brought in at least one new player in that time.
They are assessing a calf injury to defender Julio Pleguezuelo, but if that is not serious Cleverley is hopeful the club can bolster its attacking options:
"I think we'll be in the market for forward players. I think two, maybe three will come in this window.
"We're all working hard towards that, I had a meeting with Paul (Berne, chief executive) and Derek (Adams, director of football) this morning to really be on the same page.
"That's always a moving landscape, when we see the extent of Pleggy's injury and make sure Alex Mitchell's all right.
"But everyone's present at the training ground, which really helps, we can adapt to whatever situation is thrown at us.
"But I'd expect one next week and certainly one more before thee end of the window."
