Carlisle United head coach Mark Hughes says he is "hopeful" of being able to strengthen his squad in January in the National League promotion race.

The Blues are third in the table, level on points with Rochdale and Forest Green Rovers above them, but with an inferior goal difference.

When asked if he anticipated being active in the market, Hughes told BBC Radio Cumbria: "I'm hopeful.

"I think there are areas that we can strengthen. It's important we're in good shape."

Carlisle are determined to bounce back to the EFL at the first time of asking after successive relegations.

Defeat at home by Woking in their last league game was a first since late September, but with the top six only separated by six points, good signings could be pivotal towards deciding who wins the title.

"We've had a good first half of the season and if we can solidify that and build from that base, and be stronger in the second half, that might be the difference," Hughes added.
