Northampton Town have lodged a complaint with the police following a racist social media post directed at some of their players.

The post appeared following Tuesday evening's 2-1 defeat at Rotherham United in League One, which saw the Cobblers remain in the relegation places.

A club statement said they condemned the message "in the strongest possible terms".

It continued:, external "The club have reported the post to both the social media platform concerned and the police and will co-operate fully with any investigation that follows.

"The club will not tolerate such unacceptable comments and fully support our players."

Northampton took the lead through Tom Eaves but were beaten by two second-half goals from their South Yorkshire opponents.

They have now lost three games in a row and failed to win any of their past seven League One fixtures.
