Ex-Shrewsbury Town and Wolves midfielder Dave Edwards says the FA Cup third-round meeting between his former clubs is "not a nice tie" for the Premier League strugglers.

Shrewsbury landed a plum draw at Molineux after holding off National League side Sutton United 2-1 in Saturday's televised game in round two.

League Two Salop will travel 30 miles east to the Black Country to try to cause an upset against a Wolves side bottom of the top flight, 13 points from safety.

"I think it's one of the best ties Shrewsbury could've got, " Edwards, who started his career with Salop and made more than 200 appearances for the club, told BBC Radio Shropshire.

"The Shrewsbury fans will love going there. Wolves fans will feel there's a huge amount of jeopardy in the tie, so it should be a cracker."

After four seasons with Shrewsbury, Edwards joined Luton Town in 2007 before signing for Wolves at the start of 2008.

The former Wales international went on to play more than 300 games for Wolves, winning the Championship title - and Premier League promotion in 2008-09 - and League One in 2013-14.

Wolves have had a torrid season this term, collecting only two points from 15 games so far, and seem certain to be relegated despite the recent arrival of new boss Rob Edwards - another former Town and Wolves player.

"Unfortunately for Wolves it's a club that's very disconnected and there's going to be an opportunity for Shrewsbury to go there and make it difficult," Dave Edwards added.

"Being a local derby, that will give Shrewsbury a bit of an edge, the away end will be packed out and there will be an incredible atmosphere.

"It's just not a nice tie for Wolves - it really isn't.

"There's so much jeopardy; local rivals, a side you're expected to beat. But Wolves haven't won a Premier League game since April.

"I've watched pretty much every Wolves game this season and they are a team so low on confidence, while Shrewsbury are just starting to gain a little bit of momentum."

Shrewsbury players must not look too far ahead

A run of only two defeats in their past eight league games has helped Shrewsbury move out of the relegation zone, but they will want to improve on their record of only one away win before they head to Molineux on 10 January.

"They've had their struggles away from home but have done well at South Shields and Sutton [in the FA Cup] and are starting to pull away from that relegation zone," Edwards said.

"It's important the players don't get too far ahead.

"When you've got a big FA Cup game round the corner you are in self-protection mode a little bit in the games running up to it.

"You don't want to get injured. You want your form to be good and don't want to miss it through suspension, so you might not be 100% at your max. But as a footballer you've got to do that."
