Aldershot keeper Mitch Walker made a key first-half save at 0-0 to deny Notts Country's Wes Thomas

Aldershot climbed five points clear of the National League relegation places thanks to 2-1 win over Notts County.

Notts went close on 17 minutes when Ben Turner picked out Damien McCrory and he played a first-time ball into Wes Thomas, who composed himself on the edge of the area only for his low strike to be saved by keeper Mitch Walker.

But Shots forward Mo Bettamer then broke the deadlock in the 27th minute when he headed in from Jack Powell's cross.

Notts drew level briefly before the break when Regan Booty's deep cross was only cleared as far as captain Michael Doyle, who shot on the half volley and Kyle Wootton diverted the ball in.

The Shots then got the winner in the 43rd minute when Doyle was caught in possession by Alfy Whittingham, who fired low past Sam Slocombe.
