Chesterfield 2-3 Chorley

  • Published

Charles Vernam hit a double as Chorley picked up just their second win of the National League season with victory at Chesterfield.

Chorley went ahead after 16 minutes when Martin Smith's ball over the defence fell into the path of Vernam and he controlled before placing an effort beyond the reach of Shwan Jalal.

The visitors doubled their advantage just three minutes later and again Smith was the architect. His pinpoint free-kick from the left was met by Courtney Meppen-Walters, who planted a header into the net via a post.

Chesterfield pulled one back with 22 minutes remaining as Curtis Weston fired an effort from the edge of the box into the top-right corner.

Chorley seemingly put the game to bed in the 74th minute when Vernam hit his second of the afternoon from the penalty spot.

But the Spireites got another eight minutes from the end when Scott Boden tapped home from close range after Matthew Urwin had saved Mike Fondop-Talom's header.
