Time for us to say goodbye from Headingley.

Sri Lanka have beaten England by 16 runs in the second one-day international to level the three-match series at 1-1 - take a read of Matthew Henry's report to see how the game played out.

England managed just two boundaries in the overs 41-50 phase today.

The last time they batted the full 50 overs in a run chase and hit fewer boundaries in the last 10 overs was back in 2001 (v Pakistan, Lord's).

Sri Lanka captain and player of the match Kusal Mendis, speaking at the post-match presentation: "Honestly, I am very happy.

"Middle order batted well and that's why we could put more than 300 on this scoreboard.

"Of course, I am very happy when we're [himself and Kamindu Mendis] in the middle. We batted our game. Nothing special.

"The guys gave 100% in the game. Of course, today's game is finished, so we now have to focus on the next game."

England's openers got off to a superb start, reaching 143 without loss in the 20th over.

Ben Duckett hit 67 and Tom Banton 73 before Dunith Wellalage stalled the England innings.

The spinner dismissed both openers plus Harry Brook for one as England lost three wickets for 14 runs.

Jos Buttler rebuilt alongside Joe Root and Will Jacks, before injury struck.

England captain Harry Brook at the post-match presentation: "There's so many different areas that you could dwell on, but that's not what this team does. We go back to the drawing board and get ready for The Oval.

"We put up a really good fight, especially after their good start. To string it back to 320 and have the opportunity to chase that down is a hell of an effort. Rehan Ahmed bowled very nicely, we asked to keep the stumps in play and he's done that.

"The lads got off to a flier, you couldn't ask for much more. That middle area, we stalled a little and lost too many wickets.

"You want to play in close games, they're always exciting. We've got a great opportunity to win this series at The Oval."

Sri Lanka's winning total of 321-6 was built on an innings of 121 from 100 balls from captain Kusal Mendis.

He was put down by Gus Atkinson while on 17 and took full advantage, hitting 14 fours and three sixes.

Kusal put on a second-wicket partnership of 137 with Kamindu Mendis, who struck 54 from 65 balls.

England captain Harry Brook, speaking to TMS: "It is always disappointing when you lose. I thought Sri Lanka played exceptionally well there, especially the last 10-15 overs. They were electric in the field. They nailed pretty much every ball. Plenty of moments in the game where we could have been slightly better.

"Obviously, Jos being the player he is getting injured at that moment isn't ideal. Still could have come out and hit a couple of sixes at the end, but you can't dwell on that too much. I don't think he ever had any doubt in his mind himself. It was a matter of when we were going to send him out really.

"We got a great opportunity at The Oval in a couple of days to try to nail this series home. They played exceptionally well today and they deserved the victory. We have got to come back and be stronger and be better in the next game.

"Tight games are always good fun to watch and good games to be a part of. You can look at it that way - I thought we did exceptional in the T20 World Cup when we came to tight games. Having the opportunity to play in a decider will only benefit us, I think. I think Sri Lanka had an exceptional effort.

"I think Sri Lanka did an exceptional effort there in the last 10-15 overs. They nailed their yorkers, they got the ball to swing and reverse swing. They executed it exceptionally well. You always try and look back on games and see where we could have been better or stronger. Natural as a player and leader to do that, but I won't be dwelling on it too much. I don't know yet. I'll have a couple of chats with Baz and Marcus over the next couple of days and see what we come up with. Hopefully we have a good wicket at the Oval and another good game."

England hit just two boundaries after the fourth ball of the 37th over - both were struck by Will Jacks in the 47th.

Buttler departed initially after three balls of the 38th over and England's chase rather stalled from that point.

They scored 51 runs from 75 balls after his retirement - at that point they needed 68 runs to win, which at the time looked very achievable.

England were 90% favourites with WinViz just before the Jos Buttler injury.

Tactically, they may have got it wrong, sending in Gus Atkinson in ahead of Jamie Overton.
