Few attention-grabbing performances from members of England's Test squad on day one of the latest County Championship games.

James Rew did make 86 for Somerset against Sussex and pace bowler Matt Fisher dismissed Joe Root and Harry Brook in taking 3-73 for Surrey at Headingley.

Jonny Bairstow and Adam Lyth hit unbeaten centuries for the White Rose and some of the younger guard also shone, with Ben McKinney's 139 for Glamorgan and Ben Dawkins' 180 not out for Kent.

Dawkins was congratulated by England skipper Ben Stokes, who took 1-70 for Durham, at close of play - and no wonder.

We'll be back tomorrow with full coverage on day two. Please join us at 10:30 BST.

    Gloucs 154 v Northants 37-3

Nathan McSweeney steers Gabe Bell to backward point and runs hard for two.

He subsequently defends into the off side and then leaves a wider ball outside off stump.

The fourth ball is pushed to cover for one.

Luke Procter sees out the over, though the final ball seams in and hits his glove or perhaps the shoulder of the bat, flying between short leg and backward square.

Frustration, drama and entertainment on a rain and poor light-affected day one in Bristol.

Ben Sanderson bowled superbly for his 5-47, playing a big part in routing Gloucestershire for 154.

But the hosts are boosted by a 50 from Ollie Price - and a dramatic double strike from Gabe Bell, removing Harry Conway and Calvin Harrison with successive deliveries.

Northants marginally on top perhaps - but this game is wide open.

    Gloucs 154 v Northants 34-3

Three slips and a leg slip in for Matt Taylor, bowling round the wicket to Nathan McSweeney.

He gets one delivery to seam in sharply to hit McSweeney on the pad but that was doing too much for the LBW.

A no ball follows and McSweeney drives the fifth ball with half a bat to mid on.

The penultimate ball is squirted away to backward point for no run and now a gully comes in.

McSweeney is off the mark, tucking a leg side ball round the corner for one.

    Gloucs 154 v Northants 31-3

Luke Procter leaves the ball outside off stump - then defends down the ground.

The fifth ball is leg side and the final one swings away from wide of off.

Maiden over and two more overs remain tonight.

Oh, Northants. Yet again, a lot of patient hard work in the field undone by a batting collapse.

Hat trick ball and Nathan McSweeney defends Bell safely to forward short leg.

One more tonight and can we say honours even? Gloucestershire ahead?

Luke Procter defends Matt Taylor into the off side then leaves wider balls outside off.

The fifth ball is edged but low and wide of the slips for three.

Nathan McSweeney is hit on the pad but too high for the LBW.

    Three overs left tonight.

WICKETpublished at 19:02 BST 15 May

    Harrison LBW b Bell 0 (Gloucs 154 v Northants 28-3)

First ball! Coming back in and hitting the pad.

A tad high but Calvin Harrison is pinned back in the crease.

Gabe Bell is on a hat trick. Nathan Mcsweeney is in.

  9. wicket

WICKETpublished at 19:01 BST 15 May

    Conway b Bell 0 (Gloucs 154 v Northants 28-2)

Full, moving in between the bat-pad gap and striking middle and off.

    Great delivery from Gabe Bell.

    Too good for Harry Conway.

The night watcher has gone and Calvin Harrison will bat.

  10. Postpublished at 18:57 BST 15 May

    Gloucs 154 v Northants 27-1

Matt Taylor changes his angle of attack, bowling round the wicket and bouncing Harry Conway - who ducks.

The last ball is blocked on the crease and Conway moves to pick up the ball... then aborts.

Gabe Bell to resume the bowling at the other end.

We are just getting confirmation Ricardo Vasconcelos was in fact out LBW.

  11. wicket

WICKETpublished at 18:55 BST 15 May

    Vasconcelos LBW b Taylor 16 (Gloucs 154 v Northants 27-1)

Gone! It appears Ricardo Vasconcelos has been pinned LBW by Matt Taylor.

The ball did brush the back pad in front of the off stump and Ollie Price takes the ball low at first slip.

It is given out either way - and it is LBW.

Harry Conway is bumped up to number three in the order - on night watch duty.

  12. Close of play at Lord'spublished at 18:55 BST 15 May

    Middlesex 177 v Derbyshire 106-4

Nick Potts and Ben Aitchison safely negotiate the final over of the day from Naavya Sharma as Derbyshire reach stumps 71 behind with six wickets left.

Making significant inroads into the visitors' top order will provide some comfort for Middlesex after they were bowled out in 60.5 overs, having been asked to bat first at the toss.

Opener Sam Robson's 31 proved to be their top score as Aitchison took 5-47 for Derbyshire, making good use of helpful conditions.

He and fellow nightwatchman Potts will have the job of frustrating Middlesex on the second morning to enable the batters still to come to have a chance of establishing a decent first-innings lead.

  13. Postpublished at 18:51 BST 15 May

    Gloucs 154 v Northants 27-0

Ricardo Vasconcelos makes a mess of a pull shot which scythes the ball in the air, just evading the slip fielders as they run to the fine leg boundary.

A streaky single. A more comfortable two to Luke Procter, playing to square leg.

An LBW shout is turned down. A bit high on the back pad and it may have been sliding down.

The last ball is played awkwardly to backward square as Procter takes one hand off the bat.

  14. Postpublished at 18:46 BST 15 May

    Gloucs 154 v Northants 24-0

So if we do get these eight overs in we only lost eight in the day.

An LBW appeal for Matt Taylor against Luke Procter is turned down. Procter was moving across his stumps but that ball was too leg side.

Taylor gets one to jag back in to Procter sharply, who leaves the ball on length.

Procter is drawn forward, playing and missing outside off. The fifth ball is wide and guided away to deep third for two. It's actually quite bright here in Bristol now.

    Over bowled.

  15. wicket

WICKETpublished at 18:43 BST 15 May

    Jewell b Higgins 24 (Middx 177 v Derbys 90-4)

Caleb Jewell can't believe it - he goes too far across and is bowled behind his legs by Ryan Higgins.

Ben Aitchison - who took five wickets earlier in the day - comes out to join Nick Potts, two nightwatchmen together at the crease.

  16. Postpublished at 18:42 BST 15 May

    Gloucs 154 v Northants 22-0

The fifth ball is short and pulled to mid wicket by Vasconcelos - stopped by Craig Miles.

The last ball is left outside off stump.

If they light holds - we have eight overs left tonight. If.

  17. Close of play at Edgbastonpublished at 18:42 BST 15 May

    Glamorgan 341-8 v Warwickshire

Glamorgan can be pleased overnight with their efforts on the first day of their match with Warwickshire at Edgbaston having finished on 341-8 at the close.

Wickets throughout the day came in spurts; the Bears had their opponents 0-2 with the new ball after dismissing openers Asa Tribe and Zain-ul-Hassan for ducks.

The third wicket partnership was, crucially for Glamorgan, long-standing. Ben Kellaway (139) and Kiran Carlson (85) put on 194 to place the visitors in control.

Warwickshire fought back with the new ball in the evening session, claiming four wickets for just 13 runs, but Tom Norton (25*) and Mason Crane (14*) saw Glammy through to the close to set up an enticing second day.

Front-line bowlers Olly Hannon-Dalby and Ethan Bamber claimed three wickets apiece.

  18. Back on at Bristolpublished at 18:41 BST 15 May

    Gloucs 154 v Northants 22-0

Gabe Bell to complete the over interrupted by bad light earlier.

    Ricardo Vasconcelos is on strike.

  19. Close of play at Chelmsfordpublished at 18:40 BST 15 May

    Essex 10-1 v Leicestershire 333

Essex opener Dean Elgar helps himself to a couple of fours, both dabbed down to third man off Ian Holland, at the end of an enthralling day's play at Chelmsford.

Sol Budinger and Jake Weatherald (61) gave Leicestershire a flying start following the early loss of Rishi Patel and they were 166-2 at lunch and going along at a rate of more than 5.6 an over.

Budinger made 89 and Stevie Eskinazi 50 but Essex fought back strongly to bowl them out for 333.

Using Sam Cook as a nightwatch opener didn't work , but losing only his wicket in three overs before the close will be a relief for the home dressing room.

    Yorkshire 362-4 v Surrey

What a day's play it has been for Yorkshire.

After the dismissals of Joe Root, who was trapped lbw for 44 and Harry Brook who went cheaply, caught at slip for just seven, they were in a spot of bother at 121-4 against Surrey.

But a magnificent rescue act from Adam Lyth (138*) and Jonny Bairstow (116*) - who have now put on a fifth-wicket partnership worth 241 runs - has put the White Rose in a dominant position after they lost the toss and were put into bat by Surrey captain Rory Burns.

Surrey will be disappointed that they let Lyth off the hook as the left-hander was dropped by Ryan Patel while just in the thirties.

A chastening day for the visitors who will have to pull off a Houdini act in this one if they are to claim just their second County Championship victory of the season.
