The last time a team batted first at The Oval, scored this many runs, and lost, was England against South Africa back in 2012.

I thought New Zealand would be lucky to get to the total they're sitting on. It's been a productive session for them, there's been all sorts happening.

  3. NZ 332-7published at 83 overs

    That's a tidy delivery.

Josh Tongue scoots one over Kyle Jamieson's off stump, slicing through the defences of the New Zealand seamer.

New Zealand were 166-4 at tea yesterday, England leaked runs in the evening session and whilst the Archer spell was fun, this morning has really undermined the effort and handed New Zealand the advantage.

    Ben, London

Why do we constantly try to bounce the lower order out? Line and length bowling is how a bowler gets the call-up in the first place.

    Paul, Finchingfield

Other than when England got skittled against Australia in the last home Ashes, has the short ball theory ever worked? I can understand against maybe a top order player as a last resort but against the tail it just seems to fly everywhere and they get 20-30 extra runs.

    Andy, Devon

  5. NZ 329-7published at 82 overs

No harm done for Kyle Jamieson - he drives Sonny Baker's final delivery confidently through the covers for four.

New Zealand have scored 38 off five overs this morning.

Jamieson threw the helmet off and gloves down in despair that it's happened again.

That's grilled Jamieson, that gives you a bit of a shudder.

  8. NZ 325-7published at 81.5 overs

Ouch, Kyle Jamieson is hit on the helmet for the second time this morning, taking Sonny Baker's delivery right in the grille.

We'll have another concussion check and helmet change.

Jamieson is 6'8, so these deliveries are getting up a fair bit.

We sensed New Zealand were going to come out and play some shots. Sonny Baker does give you that chance.

  10. NZ 324-7published at 81 overs

    Nicely placed.

Glenn Phillips moves into the sixties, firing Josh Tongue's delivery along the grass to the mid-wicket ropes.

Tongue responds by beating the bat.

New Zealand are going at exactly four an over.

All these byes are particularly harsh on James Rew, impossible to reach so many of them. A fairly fine leg would probably have saved England 30 runs in this innings.

    Ray, Wiltshire

England never learn - this pathetic short-ball policy is only going to end one way, with a lot of easy runs for New Zealand.

    Robin, Coventry

Has no one ever taught English bowlers how to bowl yorkers? This short-pitched stuff is just giving easy runs away.

    Graham, France

  12. new ball

New ball - NZ 318-7published at 80 overs

Four more immediately as Glenn Phillips gets in on the action, pulling his 11th four between two fielders behind square.

Sonny Baker finishes with two dot balls, but that's still 13 runs off the over and 27 in total in three overs this morning.

England are going to take the new ball immediately, with Josh Tongue continuing.

This is a scruffy start to day two. Jamieson is just whacking away and they're flying everywhere.

    How's he dropped that?

  15. dropped catch

Jamieson dropped on 15published at 79.3 overs

    Four, four, dropped.

This is a sloppy start from England.

Kyle Jamieson flails through covers off Sonny Baker's opening ball, another short one, then takes a big heave and edges over the keeper.

The following delivery is lumped out to mid-wicket where Ben Duckett looks set... but puts it down.

New Zealand take a single - deary me.

Glenn Phillips has been hit (on the helmet, body, or glove) five times in this innings, the most for any innings in his Test career.

The second bye in Tongue's over made it a half century for extras - the 16th England have conceded in Test cricket.

  18. NZ 305-7published at 79 overs

Kyle Jamieson is good to go again.

He takes a single to mid-wicket to retain the strike.

I know the second new ball is coming, and it's not the fault of Baker or Tongue, but this looks a puzzling plan from England.

It appeared to be a regulation catch but it's hit Jamieson on the head.

A really strange passage of play, England were celebrating the catch.
