"I really wish there was a swish noodle bar in Sheffield that I could take us for lunch, little Greedy," said Mother of Greedy Cow on a recent visit to the Cowshed. And boom! As if by magic, a couple of weeks later, East One opened in the posh new West One complex on Devonshire Green. There are two things you should know about East One. The first is that it's run by the same people who run the New Zing Vaa in Greystones. So you know the food's going to be good. The second is that you should really get there early, 'cause it's getting extremely popular. And the reason it's so popular already is that it's storming. Inside, it's very modern and zen-like. In trad noodle bar fashion, you share tables with other parties until they're all filled up. The menu is a mixture of Chinese, Japanese and Thai dishes. Most are noodley, some are rice-based, there's a few salads and there's also a selection of side dishes (not starters - they don't do that) to accompany your main choices. The first time I was accompanied by two dear friends. By chance, we all ended up ordering rice dishes. My Thai green chicken curry was the best I've had in Sheffield - fragrant, coconutty, and extremely generous in size. My companions had sweet and sour chicken (like the New Zing Vaa, it was crispy rather than greasy, with lots of yummy crunchy veg, and most delicious) and satay delight (again, the sauce wasn't overpowering, there was plenty of chicken, char siu and big king prawns and lots of veg). We also ordered some sesame toasts, which had a good thick layer of prawn, and some gyoza (little chicken dumplings served with a chilli and ginger dip - quite delicious, and I fear they may be rather addictive for this cow
) which we didn't need at all, but quite fancied. The portions are enormous. We were all beaten. And if there's green curry involved, that's quite something for me. I looked around, saw people slurping noodles out of bowls bigger than their heads and decided it was too mean to deny the Bull the chance to mimic them asap. We returned two days later, where he had a vat of Chiang Mai noodles (flat noodles in a red Thai curry and coconut broth - fragrant, hot, spicy and delicious) and I had a large plateful of Pad Thai (Thai noodles stir fried with chicken, king prawns, spring onions, peanuts and a delicious savoury sauce). Again, we had some gyoza, which the Bull enjoyed as much as I did. On the drink side, they do several nice Eastern bottled beers, including Tsing Tao, my personal favourite, and Tiger beer. There's good tea, too. But most scrummy of all are their freshly pressed juices. I had a 'three in one' - apple, orange and carrot - which, aside from making me feel very healthy inside, was deliciously fresh, zingy, sweet and moreish. We found the service to be brisk, friendly and efficient, and the only (teensy) downside is that because of the flash modern décor (all wood and shiny surfaces) it gets really noisy, especially upstairs, when it's busy. But that's not a big deal, more of an observation really. Given the location, décor, quality of food and portion size, I can't see how this smasher can be anything but a runaway success. - Greedy Cow

Katie Wonderful! I love this place. I have been countless times and always been really impressed. The food is continually served to a very high standard, I've never seen them have an off day. A job well done! Five moos! Barry Pseudonym Really nice and very filling fodder for pretty low prices. Shame you have to sit on a PE bench to eat it. Amy I didn't like this restaurant at all. The food was on average but what bothered me was they refused to give us tap water! I thought it was illegal... Emma Usually very happy with the food here but skip the chicken noodle salad - it may have once been a chicken but what arrived on my plate was pressed, processed and lacked taste or texture. I will stick to vegetarian options in future. Helen This place offers good value for money in my opinion. The food is very well prepared and there's a lot of choice. My only small criticism would be that on one occassion I went on a weekend evening and was forced to wait 30 minutes for a table despite having booked well in advance. bex allen hi, this place sounds really cool - i was forced to change from no. 1 oriental restaurant as two of my mates at university said the location and quailty of this place was superb!! How right they were.....and I was wrong. cant wait to go again, and again..... 08/06/05 Bee I totally agree with the review efficient service, good food, nice atmosphere and decent prices! Our team of 12 visit at lunchtimes and we are served fast. 19/04/05 Paula Went in one night after work with colleagues - was not too sure what to expact after looking at the menue. Put what can I say apart from FANTASTIC food/atmosphere/price, hence the fact we are going back again yummy .
16/02/05 Tortilla Consistently good food, efficient service and generous portions. It is a bit pricey but then it's just off West Street. The juices are an excellent alternative for when you don't want alcohol - most places don't cater for that. Five moos. Catie Loved the food, but hated the hour (yes, an hour) of queuing in a barely controlled pushy crowd which was snaking out of the door (to the distress of the party on the nearest table who kept pleading for the door to be closed). The staff had said 'no need to book': don't believe them on a Saturday night!! Poppet Love it - its excellent when you want to eat in a bit of a hurry but don't want junk food. Gyoza aren't as nice as they could be...but we haven't had a bad meal there yet! Pete Sorry to disagree, but I think it is vastly overrated. My soup was disappointingly flavourless, my smoothies were unimpressive. The gyoza are, like many starters, a deep fried rip-off. Compared to Wagamama's, even, or Siam Corner in Chesterfield, then this is sub-par Thai. The inside is cavernous, the West One complex soul-less - and the patronising, didactic menu is the last straw. Serah We Eat hear all the time and it hasn't failed to impress us yet. The staff are friendly and the food is quick.....the Vegetarian singapore noodles are to die for, as is the Thai Green Curry !!!!! Oh and the freshly squeezed juices OH YUM !!! *****
Anna The best place to go in Sheffield when you're hungry, with the best service and smiles in town too.
I've lost count of the number of times I've been with friends and family because it never fails to please! Gino Great atmosphere, brilliant food, and at a good price. A good mixture of culture and great position to be in if you want to go for a few drinks on West Street after. claire I totally agree with the above comments i visited recently with some mates and we all stated that it was about time sheffield had a place like this Jonny WOW!! I will say that again... WOW! This place is so good. We originally went because friends of ours were the architects reponsible for the interiors, but we were bowled over by the quality of the food at first taste. It's big and noisy (probably not good for a romantic dinner for 2) with an electric vibe front of house and restrained chaos in the open kitchen - just like it should be). We have been back 5 times now simply its always as superb as the last visit, and it's almost impossible to spend more than £15pp. Unlike nearly every other restaurant that you could name, the best tables are right next to the kitchen. It takes no effort to feel as though you are in downtown Bejing, HK or KL. There isnt another Chinese / Asian restaurant in Sheffield that comes close to what Roger Chung has done here. Did you know that he imports his fresh wet noodles over the Pennines from Manchester's China Town instead of using dried noodles like everyone else? Well done Roger!
