Paul and Seth's Letter from America

Paul and Seth send back their very own 'letters from America' during their time in Florida following Clinton Woods' every punch...

Letter from America #1:
New York, New York

Paul and Seth set off for America on 10th April 2008 to follow Clinton Woods ahead of his fight against Antonio Tarver on Saturday 12th April, 10pm US time.

25 hours and five meals later, the boys are flagging a bit but they've got to stay awake until 10pm to get through the jet lag...

They've stopped off for a night in New York to stay with Seth's friends before flying on to Tampa in Florida, and they're staying in a house in the New York suburbs where Seth himself lived for two years.

Their excitement about the fight is growing and they're dusting off the barbecue to grill a few steaks before going to bed for a good night's sleep ahead of a 5am start to catch the two hour flight down to Tampa...

Letter from America #2:
Airport hold-ups and Tarver square-ups

After a fraught experience at the airport involving self check-in and radio equipment which looked like a suspicious package, Paul and Seth have landed in Tampa, Florida. They came on to Bigger at Breakfast to tell us all about it. Listen via the link below.

Minutes before the Tarver v Woods press conference, Paul had an 'issue' with his suitcase which he found had been locked shut by airport security...

But they made it to Clinton Woods' and Antonio Tarver's pre-fight speeches, and Paul found himself in a bit of a confrontation with the big man himself: Tarver squared up to Walker after an awkward question...

Antonio Tarver

Tarver looking very cool in London

"Tarver was his usual egotistical loudmouthed self," says Paul. "Yes he looked to be talking the talk but not necessarily walking the walk," says Seth. "There were about
15-16 people over from Sheffield, shouting at him and cheering for Clinton -it got right in his ribs in his own press conference. He didn't like that."

Letter from America #3:
Cwaarfeee and grits

Seth and Paul go on the search for an all-American breakfast at Margarita Mama's where Kim and Jessica tell them what they need to know:

St Pete Times Forum, Tampa

The fight is held at St Pete Times Forum

"Eggs-bacon-ham-toast-hash browns-Bloody Mary for a hungover day or a Mimosa (champagne and orange juice), coffee, eggs over-easy, over-medium, waffle, with ice cream, covered with strawberries-bananas-cream, and on pancakes. Bacon- maple syrup and pancakes (keep them all separate and put your crispy bacon on the side," says Jessica.

But when Paul explains about British black pudding, they don't sound keen: "Pig's blood?! Eeeuwww! No that's disgusting, gross, who would eat that!?"

And Kim and Jessica are not boxing fans either: "Boxing? Nah, I like baseball. Nope, haven't heard of Clinton Woods or Antonio Tarver."

Letter from America #4
The home run

It wouldn't be right for BBC Radio Sheffield's Sport team to go all the way to America and not watch America's national game and favourite pastime would it?

So Paul and Seth drove half an hour down the road from Tampa to St Petersburg, the home of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays baseball team at Tropicana Field Stadium where the Devil Rays were taking on League leaders, the Baltimore Oreoles.

"It's like no other stadium I've been in - the acoustics are amazing. You can really hear the bat as it leaves the ball," said Paul.

Earlier that day, the boys attended Clinton Woods' and Antonio Tarver's weigh-in at St Pete Forum, and they describe the atmosphere and the support from Clinton's fans in the room...

Letter from America #5

In Seth and Paul's last Letter from America, the boys are feeling deflated following Clinton's loss against Antonio Tarver.

Antonio Tarver and Clinton Woods

It's 2.15am. They're sitting on their hotel balcony with pizza and beer, watching Tarver's victory party going on across the river from the balcony, deconstructing the fight, speculating on where Clinton's career will go next and summing up the highs and lows of a trip of a lifetime.
