Matsoukas talks to Nikki about drawing on her background as a music video director to create beautiful images in a film that tackles police brutality and the Black Lives Matter movement. Actress Charlize Theron discusses the physical transformations she went through to play a contemporary public figure, the Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly, author Jeanine Cummins talks about her novel American Dirt and shepherd turned rapper Morena Leraba on how he’s mashed up traditional Famu music from Lesotho with electronica and hip hop. There’s a taste of the next big thing with a track from the winner of the BBC Sound of 2020, Celeste. Joining Nikki in the studio are author Deepa Anappara, who discusses her much praised novel Djinn Patrol on the Purple Line, and Russian comedian and playwright Igor Meerson.
