EU and UK closing in on a trade deal?

European Union and United Kingdowm negotiators are reported to be closing in on a trade deal, raising hopes that a chaotic economic break between the two on New Year’s Day could be averted. Britain withdrew from the EU at the end of January this year. An economic transition period which largely maintained the status quo expires on December 31st. In Italy, a strict new lockdown comes into effect today that will last until January 6th. With more than 70,000 deaths associated with the virus, Italy is the worst affected country in Europe, in terms of coronavirus fatalities. There have been reports of an massacre with in the western Benishangul-Gumuz region of Ethiopia. The Ethiopian Human Rights Commission say that more than 100 people may have been killed when unidentified armed assailants attacked a village on Wednesday.
