Europe’s ‘worst economic shock since the Great Depression’

Newsday

Available for over a year

The European Commission says the coronavirus pandemic has caused Europe's worst economic shock since the Great Depression of the nineteen- thirties. It predicts a contraction of the Eurozone economy of seven- and- a- half per cent, and warns that the eventual outcome could be even worse. President Emmanuel Macron's announcement of France reopening schools next week hasn't been welcomed by everyone. Mayors have gone as far as sending him letters and called the plan to lift the lockdown 'unreachable and unrealistic'. The Ruby Princess cruise liner which caused controversy in Australia by disembarking passengers with flu like symptoms has arrived in the Philippines. It's one of many such ships docking there as the industry remains dormant during the pandemic.
