Global stocks plunge as coronavirus fears spread

World Business Report

Available for over a year

Shares are falling as investors see coronavirus bringing the world economy to a halt. Michael Hewson of CMC Markets talks us through the moves. Sherie Fink is a journalist who covers health with the New York Times, and discusses concerns about the capacity of the US health system to cope with a rising number of coronavirus cases. India is introducing measures to block foreign tourists visiting until mid-April, amid fears over the disease. Nikhil Kriplani is chief executive of GS Travel, and gives us his reaction to the move. Plus our big topic for today examines the growing trend for workers in the US tech sector to stage protests over sexual harassment, misconduct and other issues at their companies. We speak to some of the figureheads of protests at Google in late 2018, and hear what was behind workers' grievances there. Technology historian Mar Hicks tells us what those involved in protests are hoping to achieve. And Eliza Pan, who has left Amazon after six years, and is the public face of Amazon Employees for Climate Justice, argues that Amazon founder Jeff Bezos's recent pledge of $10bn to his climate crisis fund is a sign that their activism is already working.
