Police in Hong Kong have battled pro-democracy protesters with tear gas in some of the most sustained unrest seen in the Chinese territory in weeks. Pope Francis has ushered in Christmas for more than a billion Catholics by celebrating midnight mass at the Vatican, calling on the faithful not to abandon God’s love because of the Church’s failings. The Indian cabinet has approved funds for a census and a population survey to be held next year despite weeks of protests over a citizenship law that critics say is anti-Muslim.
