About five hundred pro-democracy activists have been trapped inside the Polytechnic University in Hong Kong. following a stand-off with police in which tear gas and water cannon were met with volleys of bricks and petrol bombs. The new Sri Lankan president, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, has been sworn into office in a ceremony in the city of Anuradhapura.
