US demands Turkey agree an immediate ceasefire in Syria

The United States has imposed sanctions against Turkey over its attack on the Syrian Kurds and demanded an immediate ceasefire. There have been angry protests across Catalonia after nine separatist leaders were given long jail terms over the failed attempt to break away from Spain. Polls are due to open shortly in Mozambique's general elections where President Filipe Nyusi is standing for another term, as his governing Frelimo party seeks to extend its decades-long rule.
