The Norman Cross Prison of War camp, a few miles south of Peterborough is believed to have been the first of its kind in the world. Designed as a self-contained town with barracks, a hospital, a school, a marketplace, and banking facilities – it was home to some 7,000 inmates during the Napoleonic Wars.
