Hull’s secret museum of South-East Asian wonders. The South-East Asia Museum houses a magnificent collection of colourful and fascinating artefacts from the region. The collection was established in 1968 by Professor Mervyn Jaspan following his appointment as Chair of Sociology of South-East Asia within the Centre for South-East Asian Studies at the University of Hull. In 1972, Lewis Hill, then Lecturer in Social Anthropology of South-East Asia, assumed the role of curator of the collection and later of the museum itself. He continued in this capacity after his retirement in 2000, serving until 2022. Monica Janowski, the new curator, is leading a project to bring the museum back to life, funded by the Humberside Museums Partnership. Sally Fairfax has been discovering the mysteries hidden in the academic halls of The University of Hull.
