The doubly thankful village

Secret Herefordshire

Available for over a year

All the men from Middleton on the Hill who served in both the first and second world war returned home. The village is one of only thirteen in the country with such a history. As a result, the village has no permanent war memorial, but does have its own lantern at St Mary's Church, where parishioners pay their respects every November. Villagers often join services at nearby villages, such as Kimbolton or Leysters, for remembrance services. Church wardens Gerlinde Atkins-Child and Robin Moseley talk us through how it was an unexpected relief for the village to be so 'thankful', especially when farm families in the early 20th century were a lot bigger than they are today. Presenter: Phillip Stoneman Reporter: Trevor Owens
