‘School didn’t work for us, but farming does’

Farmwatch

Available for over a year

Julia Evans’ farm in Worcestershire boasts Game of Thrones’ Kit Harington as its patron. She won the Countryfile Hero award in 2016, due to her work at Longlands Care Farm at Whitbourne, between Worcester and Bromyard, focussing not just on food, but on people too. Julia tells Alistair Binney how she supports young people who, for various reasons, haven’t been able to excel in mainstream education, or have mental health problems. Former student turned tutor, Aston Perkins, adds that the support is available on the farm to help young people achieve qualifications, alongside one-to-one mentorship which builds self-confidence and other transferable skills.
