Baroness Kennedy condemns ‘humanitarian city’ plans in Gaza

The World at One Highlights

Available for over a year

Israel's defence minister Israel Katz has said he's instructed the military to come up with a plan to establish what he calls a new “humanitarian city” in the south of Gaza. Under his plan, eventually the whole two-million strong population of Gaza would be located there. In an interview broadcast on 8th July 2025, the World at One’s Sarah Montague spoke to Baroness Helena Kennedy KC, a human rights lawyer who last year served as an expert on a panel convened by the Internation Criminal Court. Baroness Kennedy said the plan would force Palestinians into a “concentration camp”. In response the Israeli government said: "We refute these claims, they are simply false and not grounded in any reality. “The notion that Israel is creating concentration camps is deeply offensive and draws a comparison to the Nazis. Israel adheres to the Geneva Convention."
