On the trail of the Essex witch trials

Available for over a year

During the 15 and 1600s, Essex played a significant role in the persecution of suspected witches. More than one thousand people were accused of witchcraft, and many awaiting trial were imprisoned at Colchester Castle. And now a new heritage trail is helping to throw light on this dark chapter of Essex history. Alison Rowland is a professor of European history at the University of Essex, and specialises in the subject of witchcraft in the early modern period... Picture credit: Thegoodly/Getty Images.
