This is the sixth episode in an eight-part series on the British Empire, brought to you by BBC Bitesize GCSE History. In this episode, Datshiane and Katie we will be focusing on British colonisation in Africa. This topic involves serious and often distressing subjects. Some parts of this discussion may be difficult to hear, so please take care of your emotional well-being. Feel free to pause, step away, or speak with someone you trust if needed. Katie and Datshiane examine the natural resources of Africa that European nations exploited from all parts of the continent. Additionally, they'’ll explore how colonisation was formalised through the Berlin Conference of 1885, which marked the so-called ""Scramble for Africa,"" as European countries divided up the continent. They’ll also discuss the development of African Nationalism and the lasting legacies of this period. Our time-traveling Bitesize reporter, Kitty, will take us to some key moments in this history. Along the way, we’ll provide helpful revision hints and tips, a quiz to test your knowledge, and a summary to wrap up everything we’ve covered. As always, it might help to have something handy to take notes. Don’t hesitate to press stop and rewind whenever you need to! Suitable for Edexcel, AQA and OCR A.
