The transatlantic slave trade

Bitesize GCSE History

Available for over a year

This is the fifth episode in an eight-part series on the British Empire. Throughout this series, we have been examining key moments in the development of the British Empire. This episode includes descriptions of violence, exploitation, and the inhumane conditions endured by enslaved people. These topics can be distressing and difficult to hear. Please prioritise your emotional well-being, and feel free to pause, step away, or speak with someone you trust if needed. In this episode, Katie and Datshiane focus on the transatlantic slave trade, the experiences of enslaved people including what is referred to as the middle passage and resistance movements and the abolition of slavery in 1833. Finally, Katie and Datshiane will share helpful revision hints and tips to aid your understanding of these key facts. It might be useful to have something to take notes on, and don’t hesitate to pause or rewind whenever you need to. Suitable for Edexcel, AQA and OCR A. Presented by Datshiane Navanayagam and Katie Charlwood Written and produced by: Julian Mayers Exec Producer: Alison Vernon-Smith A Yada-Yada Audio Production for BBC Bitesize and BBC Sounds
