American society in the 1920s, Prohibition and organised crime

Bitesize GCSE History

Available for over a year

This is episode five in our nine-part series on American history. Katie and Datshiane will be looking into Prohibition, the name given to the period from 1920 to 1933 when the manufacture and consumption of alcohol were banned across America by the federal government. Supporters of Prohibition saw it as a noble cause. However, it ultimately failed and had to be repealed. They'll also be diving deeper into an unforeseen consequence of Prohibition, the huge increase in organised crime and the growth of powerful gangsters and gangs. We’ll suggest revision tips as we go, so keep your pen and paper or laptop handy. Remember, every episode links up with BBC Bitesize to help you learn and succeed with 20th century American history.
